Right now I'm into The Royal Mounted Rides Again. (So I'm a sucker for Mountie films.) How is it that Bill Kennedy who plays the lead, gets third billing in the credits? This has got to be only the second time I've ever seen the sidekick get top billing. |

If you only read the first names in the billing of the original posters, you'll find that Allan Lane played The Tiger Woman and George J. Lewis was the Black Whip. |

Kennedy must have had a heck of an agent. I can just imagine the call: "Hey Bill! Good news, bubbie. I got you the lead in a Columbia serial! Now listen, you may be getting third billing, but you're the STAR of the serial, baby!" |

Chapter 12 of The Red Rider opens with Marion Shilling trapped in a runaway stagecoach; Buck Jones leaps from horse to horse until he gets to the lead horse, and then straddles alongside dragging his feet until the team stops. It's the most amazing stunt in serial history. Marion, recovering from the fright of the runaway coach: "That was terrible!" Buck: "Well, it was the best I could do." I assume Yakima Canutt was the stunt man on this? |

I'd have to see the stunt again to be sure, but more than likely it was Cliff Lyons, who generally doubled for Buck in his Universal serials. Yak didn't work much at that studio. |

Thanks. I didn't think Yak worked there much either, but it seems like this particular stunt was right up his alley so I wondered. He's got a pretty nice part in Battling with Buffalo Bill and we can see that he was actually a pretty handsome guy for somebody whose profession kept him away from closeups much of the time. |

Started King of the Kongo last night (from Rodney I think). Hey Boris Karloff! Hey a dinosaur! Seems ok so far, decent print. The only problem is that it suffers from wanting to be a silent AND a talkie (which is nicely covered on the case). Tigers in Africa, but even Burroughs originally got that wrong. Double cliffhanger for chapter 1, leopard gets the girl while a lion manages to fall into a pit with the hero. |

Yak??? I suggest you (re) view Chapter 1 of THE VIGILANTES ARE COMING (cruel & unusual punishment, I know). He plays Barsam... & the best he can qualify for is "ruggedly handsome" (a term once used to describe the football playing McKeever brothers. Nice guys & good athletes, but strictly neanderthals in the looks department.) |

I'm four chapters into SECRET SERVICE IN DARKEST AFRICA; going to watch Chapters Five and Six tonight. At one time I didn't care if I ever saw this serial again, but the intervening years have softened me up and I'm enjoying the damn thing immensely. It's bloodthirsty stuff; Joan Marsh kills no less than three Arabs in as many chapters! |

I just finished the AMAZING SPECTACULAR ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN AFRICA (or at least that's what it should have been called) because it's amazing in that it's a late Columbia and it didn't feature some spectacular-LY bad acting! You know what? It was nowhere near as bad as I thought it was going to be. Yes, there is a TON of stock footage-- not WHITE GORILLA bad, but there is a lot of "Remember when..." type stuff-- but John Hart was pretty good as Cap and overall for a late Columbia not typically awful -- as we see with BATMAN & ROBIN, both SUPERMAN's and what I've seen of BLACKHAWK. My copy from Restored Serials was pretty good quality too. Andy |

Half-million-dollar dialog: "If you've got any friends with nervous trigger fingers, Carson, tell 'em I've got six legal arguments in each gun!" -- crooked Sheriff in Tex Granger. |

In episode two of Radio Patrol, the coppers chase the villains all the way from the big city into -- (now get this) -- an Egyptian village, complete with mummy cases, guys selling vases from awning-covered street stands, everything. This is one wacky serial. And we see one of those "Did you buy this at Home Depot?" things, a giant press that's built to smoosh police officers against the wall. |

LG, I just finished that serial recently. It gets goofier. The thing that was really goofy to me is that you've got a couple of cops who do stupid things that even a rookie right out of the police academy wouldn't do. Just wait, you'll see. |

From chapter 12 of The Red Rider... Red to Barkeep: "I'll have an aqua pura." Barkeep: "We don't serve no fancy drinks here." Red: "Then I'll just have a glass of clean water." Barkeep: "Sure." |
