Not only is Symona Boniface, frequent Three Stooges pie-target, in the cast, but the tune "Three Blind Mice" looms large in the future plot, Grampy. A very enjoyable serial, despite the absence of Moe, Larry, and Shemp.

Charles King pops up in a bit part, unbilled, in episode 6 of Vanishing Shadow. A quick look at IMDB later, I noted that the guy appeared in more serials than I could count. Him, Ed Cobb, Ernie Adams, Tony Warde... One wonders how it is they showed up in so many serials for so many different companies. Was it enough to just tell the casting director, "I've appeared in ten serials over the past three years?" or whatever to get a part, showing they could handle the grueling task of filming these things? Did they get together for "poker night" with serial producers every Wednesday night, and let the producers win? Was there a "Serial Book" made up of character actors that 'specialized' in chapterplays, sent around to the studios that were producing the darn things? Did they all have the same agent?

Questions, question, questions...

Interesting questions, and it certainly wasn't typecasting, because King just popped up in Monster & The Ape as a policeman, and is the comedic sidekick in a couple other Columbias I hear.
Did they work cheap?

Add Tom London to the list. He's been in more serial and b-westerns than just about anybody

Patrolman Pat, donning a disguise in chapter 8 of Radio Patrol: "Now you'll see what the well-dressed cripple is wearing!"

P.S. The next episode is called... "Plaything of Disaster!" I kid you not.

I just finished Chapter 2 of Battling With Buffalo Bill. I rather like Tyler's Bill, but the serial is otherwise nothing special. (And I think that the cliffhanger chapter one was missing a few feet of film.)

Tom Tyler always amazed me. Although not the greatest actor in serials, whatever serial roles he had he made the defining version. Tyler WAS Captain Marvel. He WAS the Phantom. He WAS Buffalo Bill. If you've never seen it, check out Powdersmoke Range. The first 3 Mesquiteers western starring Harry Cary, Hoot Gibson and Big Boy Williams as the popular trio. Tom Tyler is tremendous as gunslinger Sundown Sauders, one of his finest roles. Underrated character actor for sure.

I'll second that. Besides Powdersmoke Range how about him in Stagecoach. He certainly knew how to die on cue.

Grampy, Grampy, Grampy... What have you DONE, muh man? You SEE why we have rules here, and what the consequences are when you break them?

On February 5, you posted that you'd seen the first episode of Monster and the Ape. Since then, you've posted again (Feb. 8, you were up to chapter 5, Feb. 11, you were up to ch. 9) and now, today, Feb. 14, you plan on watching the 15th and final chapter. You've raved about this serial, as well you should -- it's terrific. However...

Okay, maybe I'm just not up on the "new math", but it seems to me if you were watching a chapter a week, per In The Balcony rules, it would take you a little longer than TEN DAYS to watch a FIFTEEN EPISODE serial, buddy. In fact, it would take, oh, give or take... let's see... carry the 7... FIFTEEN WEEKS!!!

So, let's take a look at the calendar. You enjoyed Monster and the Ape for ten days. When I watched it, I enjoyed it for more than three months. Under Balcony rules, you shouldn't be finishing it until MAY 13.

Oh, boy. What are we going to do with you? I will leave it to Large Marge, who will, I'm sure, think up some sort of heinous - but fitting - punishment.

And I hope this is a lesson for all the rest of you out there. Don't let THIS happen to YOU.

Okay, Large Marge has meted out the punishment. Look under your watermelon picture, there, Grampy. "And THAT is what he GETS" she hissed.

Ouch. She's harsh. If you promise to obey the Balcony serial rules, maybe she'll reconsider. I'm not sure she intends to brand you for life.

As I said, though, this is a lesson to ALL of us...

Is it just me, or is Large Marge and Laughing Gravy the same person? :D :P
You should make an alternate account under the guise of Large Marge ... THEN mete out the punishment. :D

Large Marge posts occasionally. She asked me to pass this message on. And heaven only knows what she'd put under YOUR avatar if she knew that you were comparing her to ME.

Hey, Grampy, don't let Gravy push you around with his "there's only one right way to watch serials" crap! Next time you see Large Marge lumbering up the aisle, stick your foot out and trip the b---h!
