Well, we've just seen an ad posted in which a theatre in 1946 was showing both The Scarlet Horseman and King of the Forest Rangers. I guess Rodney thinks the ushers were standing at the entrance with pictures taken at the showing of the former to make sure nobody who had attended THAT one tried to get in to see the OTHER one, because it's "wrong" to watch more than one serial a week?

Actually, I was just trying to be a smart ass.

Ms Stirling seems to have the legs and moves of a dancer or someone with dance training. Was she a dancer at some point in her career?

She studied music, dance, and drama as a child.

Just started White Eagle with Buck Jones again. The new VCI dvd is of good quality.

It's not one of James W. Horne's more over-the-top serials, but Buck is great as White Eagle and James Craven is good as the baddie and there sure are a lot of familiar henchmen. Chapter 1 is pretty action-packed.

Did you get to the "Go ahead and RAM!" portion of Crash Corrigan, yet?

Not yet.

i have been watching serials for as long as video tape has made them accessible. i even actually had a 16mm.. print of 'gangbusters' at one time. i really cannot put my finger on the obsession with the genre, maybe a return to youth ( king of the rocketmen was the first serial i saw on a saturday) or a peak into the past, or just plain whiz-bang fun, on this cold, rainy presidents day i think it will be one of my all time faves....dick tracy vs. crime inc, glad to be in the balcony with all of you, i especially like the reviews, i cannot tell you how much money i have thrown away on TERRIBLE quality dvd's.....

Today I watched chapter 4 of The Secret Code. I like this serial because there's lots of action and who doesn't like to see some Nazi ass gettin' kicked. Barton gets into a fight with a couple of guys in a room that contains 2 poles connected by 3 horizontal ropes. The thing is like a quarter of a wrestling ring. Barton throws a tire around one cat and twists him up in the ropes. I don't know why he didn't just put the dude's head into the turnbuckle.

Also today was chapter 4 of The New Adventures of Tarzan. This serial is getting better than it started out. The 1st chapter was 40 minutes long and it was making me feel like Alex in A Clockwork Orange when he has his eyes pried open. I don't know if its my PD copy or not, but this serial looks old.

I'm two thirds of the way through CALL OF THE JUNGLE, which was never one of my top favorites. It seems particularly lame to me this time around. If memory serves, however, next chapter finds Noah Beery Jr. and his friends finally reaching the lost city everybody's been talking about. I remember those episodes being better.

The shortcomings aside, you gotta love a serial that features Harry Woods and Walter Miller, not to mention silent-serial stalwarts William Desmond and Grace Cunard (the latter with the most dialogue she ever got in a talkie!).

T'anks... That's pretty much why we're here.

I can't put my finger on exactly why I love serials so much, either. They're a lot of fun, though. I am sure glad that we've got Columbia and Universals, too, because the Republics get stale after a while, even the best of 'em.

It was 10 years since I saw Manhunt in the African Jungles so that's what I'm re-watching. The fights, action, Rod Cameron and miniature work are great with the chapter 1 takeout of 3 explosions of the riverboat a standout.

The behavior that separates good guys from bad guys, from episode 10 of Battling with Buffalo Bill...

(Bad guy captive, to his guard, trying to attract his attention so his crony at the window can shoot guard in the back): "I've got two dollars in my pocket. You can have it for a smoke."

Good guy guard: "I don't want your two dollars. But I'll give anybody a smoke."

(He gets shot in the back, by the way.)

Tonight was chapter 4 of Ace Drummond-The Radio Riddle. Ace finds one of the Dragon's whirling radio devices, and when he and Billy get it to work, he's gotta sing a song for the 3rd chapter out of 4. There's a car of 3 bad guys that goes down a steep decline and rolls over at least a dozen times, but Ace lets someone know so the bad guys can be rescued. If anyone lived though that, you could nickname 'em zuchini! This got me to thinking about how often do folks die in serials. I haven't seen many, or hardly any at all. Now if ya wanna be like Haley Joel Osmond and see dead folks then you need to watch.......

The 1st chapter of Zorro' Fighting Legion-The Golden God. If hordes of guys aren't dying here, then they're maimed for life. On another thread a few Balconeers said this was a good serial to watch and I just happen to have a copy, thanks to Gravy! Good call fellas! This started out with a lot of action and is a damn good 1st chapter. I'm looking forwad to next week already. Don't mess around with some masked cat with a sword, a whip, 2 guns and a white horse to boot. Yippee!

I rate ZORRO'S FIGHTING LEGION along with FLASH GORDON and DRUMS OF FU MANCHU as the three top serials in the sound era, Stony. I hope you will love it as much as I do.
I just finished JESSE JAMES RIDES again, and thought it was very good, had a lot of good touches that raised the quality. One such moment is when Jesse and his friend are made deputies, and Jesse gives him a look that he just can't believe this happened to him.
***SPOILER ALERT*** sort of.

Near the end of the serial, the ranchers are about to bring in an oil well, and the oil company representitive arrives and it is LeRoy Mason. Of course your first thought is that he is just a plant put there by the heavies, and after him seeing the trouble the heavies caused says that his company doesn't want to do business under those conditions, you are sure he is working for the heavies, but surprise, Leroy actually gets to play a good guy for once.
