Episode five of G-Men Never Forget, a title that makes no sense. Ed Cobb was in this episode, and he could've died in the opening credits for as obvious as it was that he wasn't going to survive for the next 13 minutes. This was a good episode, at least, and I'm enjoying seeing Ramsay Ames in a featured part, although she generally looks like she'd rather be anywhere else on earth.

The 12th and final episode of Battling with Buffalo Bill. Ya'll know that I judge a serial by how much fun it is, and this one ranks very highly indeed. I loved the wild-eyed feller who introduces each episode; he's practically in this thing (or actually in this thing) more than Tom Tyler's Buffalo Bill Cody. The final episode has some cracklin' silent-era footage, so Bill's hardly around a'tall (he seems to disappear a lot from this serial). A great print from VCI, and a very, very enjoyable serial. Dunno what I'm gonna replace it with yet.

Then I watched episode eight of Blackhawk. Sheesh. Michael Fox's undercover commie wouldn't have fooled Sugar & Spike, but he fooled Blackhawk, the big ninny. In the end, our heroes are chased by a cartoon flying saucer with one big eye and two antennas that look like TV rabbit ears. I think it's stock footage from Brick Bradford. Sure looks weird.

The title of G MEN NEVER FORGET is explained, sort of, in the last chapter. You gotta admit it's an unusually well-lit and photographed serial.

I will admit that indeed. The print used by AC Comics is no great shakes, however. Not bad, by any means, but not up to the standards set by their other releases, for some reason.

I am going to replace Buffalo Bill in the rotation with Grapevine's The Woman in Grey, I think.

Anybody got the Squadron's Mystery Squadron? Is it worth ordering? I have the Alpha disc, but have never opened it. Can I assume that the SS model would be a big upgrade, and that no music or color or sound effects have been added? Anybody?

This is the kinda line ya have to hear the guy say to fully appreciate, but I loved it... the nefarious villain, beaming, boasts to a henchman in episode 9 of The Vanishing Shadow: "My plans are beginning to MATURE!"

Based on the photo grabs on the Squadron Site the print looks to be pretty good. I've ordered it but have not received it yet. I too have the the Alpha DVD and at best it's about the same as VCI's VHS release.

Bruce Gentry, Chapter 1

The head of Radcliffe Engineering is trying to figure out how to get Bruce to come in to accept a mission. His secretary speaks up to the effect that maybe a woman can convince him.

"Stand up and turn around!" Says the boss.
She does and he ogles her like he hasn't seen a woman in decades.
"Yes, that just might work"

Next scene, she goes up to Gentry in his car to get his help.
"What's the matter, miss?"
"Those 2 men are following me!"
Gentry ogles her like HE hasn't seen a woman in decades-
"I don't blame them!"

More for the 'stuff you can't get away with anymore' file.

The Woman in Grey, ch. 1

A dizzying amount of plot and characters, but beautifully photographed and a lot of fun. Although only one guy has the key to a house that's been locked up and which nobody has been in for eight years (the jernt is haunted), when he gets there it appears there're plenty of folks about, and the clock has been faithfully wound (and set ahead an hour, one hopes). Fave titlecard, introducing a dapper guy in a white hat lurking about (the guy is lurking about; his hat is on his head): "J. Haviland Hunter, A favorite in Society's Circle and a Man of Mystery. Mr. Fred Jones."

I'm a-gonna eschew my weekly Western matinee and get caught up with all those serials I missed last week while in NY.[QUOTE]

From this I gather that our esteemed moderator is a serial purist but not a super-purist. A purist watches serials one chapter per week. A super purist also watches one chapter per week and skips a chapter if, for any reason, he has to miss a week.

[SIZE=1]No, Gravy, you need not defend yourself. This is meant a gentle fun. No offense is meant :P )

Sarge, ya crack me up. I dunno what a "purist" is, actually; I just know that serials are s'posed to be watched one chapter a week, and they're most fun and most interesting if watched that way. I try not to be anal 'bout it, though.

I had originally intended to watch serials for a couple of hours straight, but ended up breaking them up throughout the weekend until I was caught up. I ain't caught up yet; I still need to see Radio Patrol and Young Eagles to be caught up, and then I get to start all over again, one episode a day.

Brick, so I take it there's no messing with MS? No added music or sound effects or color? Thanks for the info.

With regard to Mystery Squadron which arrived today, I concur with Brick it is a nice print after the first couple of chapters which Pa Stark eluded to on another post. All Eric did was in this case clean up his source and make it available. No music or color just beautiful black and white.

Like I said in my misplaced post, Grood admitted that the preprint material for the first three chapters weren't in as good shape as the rest, so it is a bit grainy.
