I've been watching A Woman in Grey, which is how the word "grey" is spelled in the credits. It refers to a mystery novel which is shown in the serial itself, though, but as shown it's always spelled "A Woman in Gray". Now that is odd.

Classic dialog today, as Miss Hope defends herself from an unjust accusation of stealing the secret code: "That's an INFAMOUS lie!"

If I remember correctly, the Tarzan serial was a production nightmare that caused a falling out between Dearholt and Edgar Rice Burroughs.  In addition, Dearholt left his wife for the leading lady in the Tarzan serial and the wife took up with Burroughs.

Grampy, the Tarzan serial was indeed a production nightmare, but it didn't cause a falling-out between ERB and Dearholt. Their joint business venture, Burroughs-Tarzan Enterprises (aka Burroughs-Tarzan Pictures), never really got off the ground, and its ultimate failure did take a toll on their relationship, but the two men were friends beyond the making of NEW ADVENTURES. The company stopped functioning in 1937 and was officially dissolved the following year.

Dearholt's relationship with the woman billed as Ula Holt predated NEW ADVENTURES. She appears in a 1934 RKO release, ADVENTURE GIRL, which Dearholt produced in Guatemala late in 1933. It was his experience on that film, and the contacts he made in Guatemala, that led to the Tarzan serial being set and filmed there. Many of the locations seen in NEW ADVENTURES -- including the lost city -- were also employed in ADVENTURE GIRL. In the earlier film Ula played a native priestess, as I recall. Where Dearholt returned to Hollywood from Guatemala he brought the newly christened "Miss Holt" with him, and their affair was carried on more or less openly.

At this time -- late '33 and early '34 -- ERB was drifting away from his wife Emma, and he began seeing Dearholt's wife Florence (with whom he'd been friendly since the '20s because she knew his daughter Joan) more frequently, initially as a companion. His diary from that period contains numerous references to events that he, Florence, Ula, and Dearholt attended together -- and this is before any of them were divorced! Rather a "progressive" relationship they all had, don't you think?

Dearholt didn't actually marry Ula immediately after Florence divorced him, at which time ERB divorced his wife Emma and married Florence. Dearholt and Ula were finally married in July 1935, about six months after the completion of principal photography for NEW ADVENTURES. The Dearholts continued to socialize with ERB and Florence for several more years; it's unclear exactly when this little circle dissolved, but I'm guessing that relations became strained in 1938 when the company finally went under in a sea of red ink. ERB, who earlier had personally guaranteed a note for $50,000 needed to keep Burroughs-Tarzan afloat, got out from under by selling NEW ADVENTURES to distributor Jesse J. Goldburg, who kept the two feature versions in circulation for many years thereafter.

I wrapped up The Lost City last night. Boyd puts the mad in mad scientist in the last chapter. I'll have to upgrade to a better copy in the future.

From episode 2 of The Vanishing Legion; a henchman brings Edwina Booth the news that they ALMOST captured Edward Hearn.

Edwina: "I don't want the NEWS! I want the MAN!"

Last night I started DARKEST AFRICA, which I haven't seen since the early '90s, when Republic came out with it on laserdisc. The DVD I'm watching was copied from the laser and looks pretty good. DARKEST AFRICA has never been a big favorite, but those angles of the Bat Men in flight and the tracking shot through the miniature city set are pretty impressive. I still think Manuel King is a grotesque little homunculus, though, and remain thunderstruck that the directors could have thought for a single moment that audiences would believe him a blood relative of the babe-i-licious Elaine Shepard. A little suspension for your disbelief, sir?

From chapter four of The Mysterious Pilot, as a character discusses Cap'n Frank Hawks' skills...

Today I received the first serial I've bought in maybe a year or more...Battling With Buffalo Bill starring Tom Tyler. It was one of two I ordered recently. The other, The Scarlet Horseman has yet to arrive. Maybe next week for that one.

From the ninth episode of The Scarlet Horseman: "That's one of the few things I like about you. You're so cold-blooded that you're useful."

Two chapters into Radar Patrol vs. Spy King for an upcoming chat. Pretty unremarkable late Republic entry. A lot of hoopla about former OSS agent Kirk Alyn and a ring of radar stations protecting our borders from super-spy John Merton. Anthony Warde provides support villainy. George J. Lewis in an ineffectual role as a Mexican police lieutenant.
Jean Dean is the plain-jane-who-always-gets-knocked-unconcious. Some nice spy gimmicks like a smokescreen emitting car, but a pretty mild actioner overall. Cliffhangers aren't much either.

Saturday I wrapped up The Phantom Creeps. Lugosi blows up the Hindenburg :P
Also wrapped up SOS Coast Guard Saturday. Let's just say, it wasn't a good day for Bela.

Sunday I finished Undersea Kingdom. I'll just say, thats-a some good serial. The 2 guys used for comic relief were hardly in the thing. I remember the 1st or 2nd chapter when they board the sub and one of them laughs at the other, prompting the other to throw a mop, bucket and parrot at the guy.

Also Sunday, was the 1st chapter of Flash Gordon's Trip To Mars. Funny radio station repoting the disasters.....WGAB.

Last night wrapped up The New Adventures OF Tarzan. I liked this one but the last chapter didn't work for me. Mostly a recap, er....recrap  Also last night was the 12th chapter of The Secret Code. Another fine serial......sez me :)
