There's no bad blood between the Serial Squadron and this site. I believe some people have a problem with Eric, but so far as I know there's no bad blood between sites, whatever that means.

How do you know if he's sending you PM's if you don't visit the site anymore ? ;)

Um, I get an e-mail telling me that I have a private message from him. At least I did. I have since set the account so that does not happen.

Todd's serial is a home movie, but costs the same price as a professional film. If that appeals to you, go for it.

As for "bad blood," nobody here attacks the Serial Squadron. If there is a war, it's a one-sided war.

I wouldn't exactly call it a war, nor attacks, nor bad blood ...

... more like disagreements with the way some things are said and done by the Admin of the Serial Squadron, and the way some of the Serials have been changed from their originality ... the way they were intended to be seen when they were made.

As mentioned over in the Balcony Challenge thread, I watched a slew o' serial episodes today (say that aloud in a "Sylvester the Cat" voice! It's fun). Here's some classic dialog:

Vanishing Legion ch. 7, Harry Carey to heinous villain: "I'll bet you stand out like a sore thumb on a piccolo player."

Jungle Queen ch. 2, Nazi agent: "Ze British vill NEFER suspekt zat VE are ze German agents dey are LOOKINK for!"

A Woman in Grey, ch. 10: Asked to describe the mysterous woman known only as "The Beautiful One", the creepy guy in the basement says, "She's pretty." Ummm... Thanks. Glad we don't have some ugly chick as "The Beautiful One", that's for sure.

The Mysterious Pilot, ch. 10, disgruntled labor leader in the lumber camp: "I'm gettin' SICK and TIRED of workin' for a WOMAN!"

Just finished chapter 6 of Perils of Nyoka again. One of Republic's best and easily in my list of top 5 Republics. I'd say if you're going to show a serial chapter to a newbie, chapter six of this one has it all - appealing hero (Clayton Moore), heroine (Kay Aldridge), villainess (Lorna Grey) and henchman (Charles Middleton). Also the monkey, Jitters, has a really good scene. Lots of action, good cliffhanger, and some superior camera work as the camera cuts from a closeup of Vultura's eyes to Nyoka dangling over a pool of flaming death and the sun slowly burning throught the rope suspending her from the ceiling.

Women particularly seem to like Perils of Nyoka - I guess because of the strong heroine and villaness in addition to a monkey and a dog. Oddly, women do not seem to find Satan (Emil Van Horne in a gorilla suit) all that appealing.

I'm also watching PERILS OF NYOKA and agree with my friend with the glowing red eyes and no body that this is a great serial. Just like THE SPIDER'S WEB,it is one of the fastest paced serials ever. It just moves and never lets up. My favorite chapter is three with Nyoka hanging from a broken rope bridge, then a wild fight inside a cavern with pools of molten lava all over. Clayton Moore was in 10 serials (not counting his stock footage appearance in FLYING DISC MAN FROM MARS) and this was by far his best role. Probably near the top five heroes of the sound era.

Tonight I started Dick Tracy. As far as I can tell, Richard Wentworth is running around in a funny pair of shoes, killin' folks. Smiley Burnette's shoes I didn't see, but he's scoring touchdowns in the ninth inning....go Smiley! Back to the killer's funny shoes...I'm goin' out on a limb here and say...red herring. I bet that's not too far out on a limb either!

I find your avatar ironic because the first time I ever saw Dick Tracy was on Super Host. I believe it was in 1978.

Last night I saw chapter 2 of Dick Tracy. Not much on the fisticuffs, but very entertaining. A lot of gunplay and a good cliffhanger, I gotta see this escape next time! Smiley is funny cutting up with the kid AND getting hit on the head with an umbrella by an old female chicken farmer. Dick's a little slow catching onto the clue from the chick chicken farmer. He needs a little asbestos to clear the grey cells. I bet the 9 year olds caught it right away!

Just finished chapter 8 of the Phantom Rider (the '36 one by Universal).

So far an above average, though not an excellent serial. Buck Jones is a charismatic hero and the Phantom Rider costume is different. Enjoying the storyline and there is some very good dialogue. The action is just enough to keep the story moving. They usually squeeze one song into each chapter (usually "Old Chism Trail" which I've heard three times now). The "mystery" villain is one of the worst-kept secrets I've ever seen. Also don't know whose brother-in-law the sheriff is - an amateurish actor who really sticks out among the rest of the cast.

I wrapped up The Mysterious Mr. M last week and found it to be a pretty acceptable, though not remarkable serial. Of course the identity of Mr. M was ridiculously obvious to anyone who heard the voice on the records, but aside from all of that it was a pleasant diversion from day to day life.

I'll be starting The Spider Returns within the next day or so, having enjoyed the original Spider serial a year or so back. I know this one is different, but I think I'll still have fun with it.
