I second Marlin's recommendation of Roan's copy of THE THREE MUSKETEERS, it is excellent. Only minor thing I noticed is in around chapter four which is an economy chapter, the recap footage is missing.

I agree the Roan copy is excellent. This is also the Duke's best serial and one of Mascot's best. You get the sense the thing was filmed in the African desert. This was on of the first DVD's I bought. Not realizing it was a double sided DVD, I thought I was missing a disc. I felt quite the fool when the seller told me to turn it over!

Roan's The Three Musketeers was the first serial ever to be released on DVD!

I finished The Flying G-Men the other night and found it to be a very entertaing serial. I also enjoyed Captain Midnight a lot more than the general opinion, from what I read. These are both Horne serials and the thing I liked about them is their continuity, not the humor he is generally credited for. Of course I haven't had the courage to watch Terry and the Pirates yet! :P

Well, I like Captain Midnight and I don't care who knows it. It's fast-paced, well-cast...and just plain silly at times. I'm in the minority because I've always believed that humor can only help a serial. My detractors say it's because I'm not old enough to have seen these chapter plays when they were originally shown in theaters, a fact that I cannot dispute. Nevertheless, the antics of James Craven ("Bah! Patriotic bosh!") provide first-rate entertainment...not to mention Dave O'Brien and his "Tennis, anyone?" persona as Cap.

CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT is a very fun serial! In fact, I have a CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT shirt that I wear with pride (depicts a scene from the serial on it). When we showed this on FNF years ago, we served Ovaltine -- which was promptly poured down the sink. Nasty stuff, that.

My friend The Black Tiger told me that he met Richard Webb, the television Captain Midnight at a convention, and Webb told everyone that he hated Ovaltine. I don't blame him.
Speaking of nasty drinks, Black Tiger loves a drink called Moxie, and I tried it once and it was terrible. Last year at SerialFest we actually had a blind taste test to see which was worse, Moxie or Howling Monkey, and at first I thought Howling Monkey was worse, but a few seconds after trying Moxie, the terrible aftertaste kicked in. Moxie was voted worst drink. See the stuff you miss not attending SerialFest.

My younger brother's a Moxie fan, so I'm familiar with that, but Howling Monkey? :o

I think it's a rock group. It would certainly be a good name for a rock group.

Ovaltine! You HAD to buy one jar of it so you could get that damn de-coder. Of course, my mom made me drink the whole thing (something about starving Armenians). Bleccchhhh!!!
