My younger brother's a Moxie fan, so I'm familiar with that, but Howling Monkey? :o

Isn't that one of those Hong Kong chop-socky movies?

RR you've got that movie mixed up with "Screeching Monkeys, Howling Hyenas."

Ovaltine used to taste like medicine; Bosco like I envisioned a mixture of tar and muddy war. Bosco was much worse!

Well, NOT to my juvenile brain at the time. Of course, that was a l-o-o-o-o-ng time ago and I have no idea how my current juvenile brain would respond. I don't think I'll chance it!!!

All this talk of Ovaltine makes me curious. As a Kid I seem to remember I liked it but it has been so long I don't really remember. So the next time Mrs Smiley and I go to super market I am going to get a jar and try it. I will report later.

Wish me luck!!! :D

Go here to listen to a Captain Midnight - Ovaltine commercial and how to get a secret decoder badge.

As I've mentioned elsewhere, when I was a kid and listened to Captain Midnight on the radio, I begged and begged my folks to buy a jar of Ovaltine, so I could clip the paper seal, just inside the lid, and together with a quarter, send for my very own official Captain Midnight decoder ring. They finally relented and bought the Ovaltine, but with the caveat that I had to drink it, 'cause they weren't having any. Apparently they'd already tasted the foul stuff at some previous time in their lives. So I got my ring, but I thought I'd never see the the last of that nasty old Ovaltine! I had to drink a glass every morning for breakfast until it was gone. YUK! Then to further my disappointment, the secret messages the good Captain imparted at the end of each show, which I could now decode with my new ring, were only ads for the next show. What a waste! And I've never again touched Ovaltine. I'm surprised it's still around. The next time I was wise enough to beg for mom to buy some White King laundry detergent, so I could send in for a magic trick, the old disappearing nickel, or changing a coin from one to another, slide apparatus from Chandu the Magician. :D

I used to like chocolate Ovaltine as a kid. I think there was a plain Ovaltine too and that was a different cup of whatever it was.

Some of you folks surely remember this take-off on the Bosco jingle.

I hate Bosco it's rich and choclatey
Momma put some in my milk to try and poison me
But I fooled Momma and put some in her tea

Chandu:  I believe it was a decoder badge and not a ring.

Kan, according to this, you are correct.

http://cmp.bravepages.com/cc_articles/ovaltine.html

Yet I distictly remember having to choke down Ovaltine, I think it was the malt stuff, in order to send away for a Captain Midnight premium, and I don't remember having a badge of any sort. I do remember the ring however, and remember it was a bronze colored plastic and had some sort of detatchable round ball where the emblem would be. I think that was used in the decoding, somehow. Now it coulda been a Lone Ranger or some other radio hero ring, I suppose, but I always associated it with Captain Midnight. It was a long time ago, (early '40's) and I wasn't even 5 yet, so who knows? I also remember being mad at the Captain for making me choke down all that Ovaltine just to be able to decode commercials for his upcoming shows. What a dirty trick for a hero to play on his adoring fans!

My buddy Durango Kid had a secret decoder badge back in the day. He said the first messege he translated was "DRINK OVALTINE".

Maybe after tasting the stuff kids thought you did something else with it :)

As for me, I was more a Cocoa Marsh kid.

Quigley, yes I do remember that take off on the Bosco commercial, but you left off the last line: "Now I have no mother to try and poison me."
A few years ago I again bought a jar of Ovaltine, and it was pretty bad, but nowhere near as bad as Moxie. If you drink Moxie, what happened to Black Tiger will happen to you, Your head will fall off, your eyes will glow red, and smoke will come out your nose.

Thanks Pa - Your right the last line made the jingle work. Never had Moxie. I'm an East coast guy and I believe that Moxie was a mid-west "pop".

No, you can buy Moxie on the East Coast, but I wonder why you would want to try it? Tiger, let Quigley know where you can buy it. Hell, even winos wouldn't touch that crap.
