I'm not saying this to be a smartass...but did you fry it up or did you eat it right out of the can? I'm just curious because I find Spam rather tasty if it's fried up. In fact, I'm having spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, baked beans, spam, spam and spam. Baked beans are off! Well, can I have spam instead? You mean spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam? (Spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam...) Yes. Arrggh! (...lovely spam, wonderful spam...) Shut up! Shut up! |

Mrs Smiley and keep a couple of cans of Spam in the pantry at all times. That way I have something to eat when I am banished to garage or the basement.
Seriously, we fry it. She puts a little catsup on the sandwich and usually put a little B-B-Q sauce. I think it is rather tasty. Granted I would not want a steady diet of it but I rather like it for a change of pace. One of the times I was in the hospital my roommate made Spam for The Hormel Company here in the KC area. He said that regardless of what people generally say and all the jokes about Span that you hear it is made from some of the best cuts of meat that are available. That's what he said. He had worked for Hormel for 30-years. Kan |

I bought a can of Spam several years ago - I hadn't had it since I was a kid. The flavour was certainly fine. My only problem was that the stuff was so darned salty. I was guzzling water for the rest of the day. |

Wow. When I was a kid, I lived with my Mom & Dad and five sisters (well, four, one got married when I was very young) and a brother and my evil Nazi grandma and frequently Eddie & Suzie lived with us and sometimes an Uncle. And we were actually fairly poor. We ate a lot of stew with "mystery meat" in it and potatoes and noodles and soup and bologna. Lots and lots of bologna. And Kraft mac and cheese, a lot of that. Breakfast food for dinner sometimes. Liver! We ate a lot of liver. Y'know what we DIDN'T EAT? Spam. Not more than once, anyway. Even we had to draw the line somewhere. |

We have a regional fair going on here. I was watching a local newscast last night about some of the new eats being shopped around at this year's fair... last year the big deal was fried Twinkies. No... don't even ask. Of course I tried one & I'm still trying to shake the effects. What I refused to sample was the fried Snickers bars in some kind of doughnut batter. This years new fad fair food is something that looks like fried chicken batter encrusting slices of Spam. Hmmmm... fried, battered Spam slices... sounds vomitous! I'll have three -hold the ambulance. |

I had decided to stay away from the Balcony until after Election Day, but I've just returned from the final session in a three-day screening of the 1918 Pathe serial, WOLVES OF KULTUR, and my enthusiasm for it demands that I break radio silence. Five-chapter chunks of this goodie were shown on three consecutive days as the "retro" part of a rather poorly attended Film Festival held in Rutherford, New Jersey. The recently restored KULTUR rated inclusion in the program because parts of it were filmed in nearby Fort Lee. I had seen the heavily truncated home-movie version of KULTUR offered many years ago by Blackhawk Films, but the restoration (which seems to have been assembled from no less than three different nitrate prints unearthed in Europe) plays significantly better. This is the serial that made a star of newcomer Charles Hutchison -- and now I know why. Hutch performs virtually all of his own stunts (there were one or two in which he might have been doubled), and most of them are truly breathtaking. Several remarkable action sequences are staged in and around upstate New York's Ausable Chasm, a picturesque location to which Hutch returned in subsequent serials. Leading lady Leah Baird and chief henchman Karl Dane do most of their own stunts, too. The final quintet of episodes unfolds more or less in "real time," with a dazzling succession of chases and fights leading up to a most satisfying demise of the villains. I'm very enthusiastic about this serial, and I mention it here because there is a possibility that it will be made available on DVD in the next year or two. If so, be sure to pick it up. Unfortunately, the screenings were poorly attended. Only four hearty souls made the trek to Rutherford for this rarity: me, fellow Balconeers Black Tiger and HiYoSilverAway, and Serial Squadron member acedrummond. But I can tell you that a good time was had by all. |

Thanks for the report, RR. Sad to hear the attendance figures, but I hope the serial finds its way to a DVD release. |

Wish I could have attended. This is the contact page for Lobster Films, who did the restoration. I sent an email to the main address inquireing about and encourageing a DVD release: http://www.lobsterfilms.com/contact_us.htm |

I agree 100% with Riddle Rider. Wolves of Kultur is a highly enjoyable silent serial. The overall plot is about a gang of spies planning to steal a revolutionary aerial torpedo for the Kaiser. They are opposed by several factions including the niece of the torpedo's inventor (Leah Baird), the two-fisted young man who loves her (Charles Hutchison) and a private detective who is also a master of disguise (Sheldon Lewis). As in Les Vampires, the leadership of the Wolves of Kultur changes several times during the serial. Fantastic stuntwork and scenic location work are featured throughout. The storyline gets repetitive in spots, but the positives far outweigh the negatives here. I was surprised to learn that the existing condensed print actually has scenes out of order. Things have been restored properly with new title cards in the new version by Lobster Films. As mentioned, this serial may be released on dvd in a year or two. It will be part of a boxed set of films shot in New Jersey. The audience may have been small, but the spirit was mighty as Riddle Rider, Ace, Hi Yo Silver and myself enjoyed this journey into the past. |

I've been making my way through The Spider Returns lately, and I enjoy it a lot. Every chapter seems a little more silly and absurd than the one before it, yet there is a plot and it all hangs together. I think I'm seven chapters in, and it really is a very good serial, no matter what some folks think. |

Watched the first chapter of THE SCARLET HORSEMAN, last night. So far it looks like a fun one. |

Tonight I watched chapter 1 of The Three Musketeers again. The Roan version looks fantastic, at least chapter 1 does. I can actually hear AND see everything, unlike the shitty PD version I tried to originally watch. The ending to chapter 1on the PD disc skipped, dipped, tripped, flipped and looked a lot like the opening of The Outer Limits. |

Okaaaaay...three episodes into THE SCARLETT HORSEMAN and that freaking theme music for him is quite annoying. |

A few years ago, I thought it would be fun to try Spam again, "just for old time's sake." ;)
UGH!!

Granted I would not want a steady diet of it but I rather like it for a change of pace.
