I'm so glad you liked MYSTERIOUS ISLAND, Chandu. It ain't the best serial I ever saw, but it's always been my favorite since I first saw it at the age of seven. There never has been a cheaper, sillier movie, but it's still pretty well-directed. Nothing like Ed Wood, really, but about as dumb a script.

If you like this one, try PANTHER GIRL OF THE KONGO.

I haven't watched a serial in eons, practically, so I'm trying to get caught up and at least finish ones I've started. Today's breathless dialog, from episode 8 of The Vanishing Legion, comes from a forward-thinking attorney, who says, "I don't want you to get arrested until I've had time to prepare your defense!"
The entire Balcony awaits Young Eagles!!!
It's like Rodney King used to say, "Can't we all get a bong."

In keeping with the Thanksgiving spirit, I would be interested on how interesting you can make Young Turkies... I mean Young Eagles appear. Worst professional serial I ever suffered through.

Recently watched Government Agents vs the Phantom Legion. Walter Reed is pretty stoic (wooden as a cigar store Indian). Fun seeing Dick Curtis in a Republic serial as the lead henchman. The Voice is perhaps the weakest business-suited mystery man in serialdom. And the reveal of his identity in the last chapter is so poorly shot, you'll probably have to rewind a few times just to figure out who he is. I know I did. Plot is pretty pedestrian and typical of Republic's later efforts. Of course just how interesting a serial can you make about a truck hijacking ring? The stock footage cliffhangers were okay, but the new ones were weak at best. At least the chapters are short (about 13 minutes) and the action moves quick with a fight in every chapter. I give this one out of four stars.

I'll go with the one star. How interesting can a fedora serial with about six actors be?

Intense narrator at the end of chapter 11 of The Mysterious Pilot: "Does Jean's STEPMOTHER know WHY Jean fears SNOWDEN?!?!"

Chapter 10 of The Three Musketeers. It's a bit of a rehash of Creighton's demise, but there's a little action too. Nice horse and rider going down a slope and taking a tumble. 2 chapters remaining and my money is not on El Shaitan!

A phrase I'm gonna try 'n' use today, courtesy of Arlene Pretty, defending herself from a charge of homicide in chapter 12 of Woman in Grey: "That's an INFAMOUS lie!"

Eddie Quillan showing what a REAL man he is in episode four of Jungle Queen: "I know how to handle cats!"

A few chapters into Congo Bill. Don McGuire is more suited to be a villain than a hero with his pencil thin mustache and surly looks. As usual for a Columbia there are a number of villain factions running around - Leonard Penn, I Stanford Jolley, Frank Lackteen. Cleo Moore is a babeacious jungle queen, but she doesn't even start to do much until the 5th chapter. Warmed-over plot is about the search for a missing heiress to a wealthy circus (HA!) who may be a mysterious white queen of a tribe in the deepest jungle, and those that wish to exploit her (and they haven't even seen her yet). Relatively dull after 6 chapters with some weak cliffhangers. The Spencer Bennett/Thomas Carr action scenes are okay, albeit too short.

One exchange between the evil witch doctor (Frank Lackteen) and his tribal minion (Stanley Price):

Witch Doctor: "A man's will is stronger than a woman, even if she be a queen."
Minion: "You're right, Nagu!"

It's obvious these savages haven't been "civilized" yet B)

Spent this snowy Ohio Sunday afternoon dubbing Dick Tracy Returns from VHS to DVD and reaffirming this excellent cliffhanger as number 10 in my top 10 serial list. And sure wish the 2 edits of Dave Sharpe being shot and then the 1 edit of his iron lung being unplugged in chapter 1 could have been restored. Per "Valley of the Cliffhangers," censors made Republic edit these 3 scenes because of the overdone violence.

Not too good. About the same as everyone else's I suppose. Got a vhs from a 16mm collector back in the '80s.Most of the Columbia's are not very sharp - except whatever Columbia released themselves.

Last chapter of THE SEA HOUND will be tonight. The serial is a little juvenile, but fun.

Still getting caught up on my serials, untouched in weeks, today I got to chapter 10 of Trader Tom of the China Seas. And it's... a RECAP chapter. Perfect! It's nice to finally get some damn USE out of one o' those usually-pesky recap chapters.
