I've had four serial chapters in rotation since I started collecting them, but these days it can be months between chapters. Frankly I've seen the good ones and now silent and foreign movies interest me more. On a more positive note, I've been watching Zorro Rides Again on TCM and am glad to say Mr. G was right all along, this is the best Zorro serial by far, much better than I originally rated it. I don't know why I was so off base. Maybe I was just disappointed at how little screen time Noah Beery got. |

I consider ZORRO RIDES AGAIN better than THE LONE RANGER for several reasons, but rate ZORRO'S FIGHTING LEGION as one of the top three serials of the sound era. |

ZRA is my favorite Zorro serial as well. The problem with ZFL despite a very good performance by Reed Hadley, the good mystery villain Don Del Oro and some great stuntwork by Yak, is that the decision to substitute clunky sword duels for fistfights didn't work for me. If the dueling was smooth, I probably would have overlooked this, but in many scenes the villains, particularly Moreno look scared to death as if they are scared someone is going to put their eye out. Poorly choreographed. Moreno and the Yacqui Tarmac are non-entities as henchmen, unlike Richard Alexander as El Lobo. Also as much as I enjoy a mystery villain, it's a mistake to cast all villains as suspects. You really don't care who gets killed off or who Don Del Oro is. |

Yeah, but the music is so much better in ZFL (and NO, I'm not talking about the song behind the credits)!! |

Watching chapter 11 of Drums Of Fu Manchu last night, I noticed that when the 2 groups are fighting, Fu just watches. If he had a snub-nosed .38 in his sleeve, he'd have the septer from Genghis Khan's tomb, and merrily be on his way to ruling the world, but alas, he's a voyeuristic cat. Allan Parker takes a dive from a rock and into a fight, and it's a dive that would make Hobie Billingsley proud! I think I'll go to the doctor and tell him that everytime I hear the drums of Fu Manchu my pulse races and my blood pressure goes up. I wonder what he'd prescribe? Probably a strait jacket!!! Also last night was chapter 3 of Buck Rogers. I can't help but to laugh, because everytime I type BUCK ROGERS, I'm hearin' Daffy Duck. Buck and his sidekick Buddy sneak into Killer Kane's HQ, like they have invitations. I'm enjoyin' this serial none the less. |

Agree on the Zorro's as both are in my top ten serials of all time. I just rate "Rides Again" slightly above "Fighting Legion." "Legion" has some of the best cliffhangers of any serial with the closing wall, the stagecoach drag, the avalanche, and the suspension bridge fall. But overall "Rides Again" excels in excitement, bad guys, locations, all the train stuff, special effects, more vintage looking and sounding and somehow leaves me more satisfied. |

Great Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok - See Gordon Elliott transformed into Wild Bill the "Peaceable Man" Learn the fate of Jerry the friendly Indian. Columbia 15 chapters. The cast includes a number of serial standbys from Reed Hadley to Monte Blue; Chief Thundercloud to Rosco Ates; and Mala too. Probably Columbia's best western. |

I've always figured that John Ford copied Tom Tyler's death in STAGECOACH from Richard Cramer's demise in this film (served as a chapter ending, if I recall)!! |

Last night I went to the Hollywood Heritage Museum in the Lasky-DeMille Barn (in the parking lot across the street from the Hollywood Bowl). The presentation was about Francis Ford (John's older brother) & Grace Cunard who were once billed as "The two greatest serial stars on earth." Unfortunately, none of their serials survived. However, we were treated to a segment of a short entitled BLACK MASKS. In this, Ford & Cunard are competing jewel thieves at a party & their efforts to outwit their quarry... and each other were imaginative & amusing. The rest of the program consisted of stills from their various serials & commentary. Fascinating stuff!! |

Francis Ford was in surviving serials, without Grace Cunard. Not too long ago, I watched Gordon of Ghost City with Ford as a reclusive "Mystery Man" living in a ghost town. BTW - the copy I watched was of atrocius quality. I wonder if Rodney has a decent master. |
