I only have one chapter left in Ace Drummond. I may watch it in the morning, since I forgot to watch my Wednesday chapter. Next, I'm starting The Secret Code.

I'm playing catch-up with Mysterious Island (nice print from Rodney).

Somehow I saddled myself with three western serials at once (well, three set in the 19th century, anyway). The other two are The Adventures of Red Ryder and The Oregon Trail. I'd postpone Oregon Trail, but the staggering amount of stock footage in the opening chapter, combined with generally atrocious editing, has made me curious to see whether the thing will hang together as it grinds along or simply collapse under its own weight. Looks as if the scenes of Indians chasing the wagon train were lifted from silent films. Galloping horses at 18 or 20 frames per second become rocketing horses at 24. Cutting these chases into the 1939 footage makes Johnny Mack Brown and his wagon train pals look like they're moving underwater.

I finished Mysterious Island today. I would have to say that is one of the strangest serials I have ever seen. You have a group of escaped Union soldiers, beings from Mercury, pirates, volcano people and Captain Nemo from the Nautilus. Poor Mrs Smiley would walk through the room and see a different group of people and each time and was totally confused for two weeks.

What more could a dedicated serial watcher want? :'(  :-/

I will start Drums of Fu Manchu tomorrow. The copy I have had for 3 or 4 years is a terrible duped copy. I ordered a batch of serials from Rodney and watched the first chapter of each. Drums has potential of being a much superior print than the one I have had.

So glad you liked Mysterious Island, Smiley, if you did. Of all the serials I saw as a kid, it's the one I remembered best, because of all the, um, mysterious different elements. The image of Nemo carrying Harding through the side of the mountain has always been part of my mental furniture, which, my wife says, may explain a lot.

[I guess I never did say whether or not I liked Mysterious Island. Yes, I did enjoy it. I said in a previous post I believe it is the first serial I have ever seen that didn't have well defined villian. At various points in the serial each of the five groups aligned themselves with a different group. As is said all's well that ends well. Yes, panzer, I did enoy Mysterious Island. I tend to finish most serials if I am hooked by the 2nd or 3rd chapter.

On FNF, we've seen four episodes so far, and the only way we know who the Helmet Guy is or what the name of the Pretty Lady from Outer Space is, is because we read the friggin' opening credits....

The World Akin! :D

Nobody on alt.movies.serials knew what that meant!

Good serial, Ace Drummond - Creighton Chaney wore his Chinese coolie's hat at a rakish angle and Ace sang! :D

Speaking of the Squadron's Ace, I finished watching his favorite serial last night, and it's one of the best: TIM TYLER'S LUCK. I mention it because VCI has the best print and all their stuff is on half price sale for a few more days. Don't let the grass grow under your feet, fellers. This one you'll watch more than once.

Agreed, Mr. P. An enjoyable serial and VCI's print is very nice.
