I thought the invisibility gimmick was a bit of a reach, even for little kids, when I watched it too!
Not plane, nor bird, nor even frog. It's just little ol' me...

That's not the only silly thing about this one, Bat, as you will soon find out... MONSTER's kinda fun, IMO; not as much fun as PANTHER GIRL OF THE KONGO, but fun.

Well, I don't know if it's a good serial or not (not yet anyways) as I have only finished up to Chapter 2, but I am watching THE INVISIBLE MONSTER.

A mostly typical Republic effort so far (nothing wrong with that), but the main "catch" of this particular serial is pretty inane. The villain of the story goes about committing his evil acts by making himself invisible. Sound good, in theory, but for this baddie to rend himself invisible he must have one of his henchman project a special light beam on him. Yes, it makes him invisible, but since the beam must remain trained on him for him to remain invisible, there is a curious spotlight running around wherever he commits a crime. Which of course anyone, except a serial hero, could figure out right away that it was the invisible bad guy.

I would agree with you on that Batman. The villain had to stay in the beam of light to stay invisible. He and the light source (the light looked like a floor model hairdryer you would see in a women's hair salon) rode around in the back of a big stake truck. Most of the time he was in an alley to break into a building. So the most distance he generally got was about 10 feet before he went into the building at which time he became visible again. The Invisible Monster is a fun (if typical) serial from Republic.

MONSTER's kinda fun, IMO; not as much fun as ....
Chapter 8 of Buck Rogers: Revolt Of The Zuggs. Shoulda been titled "The Revoltin' Zuggs." I guess the Clay People from Flash G's Trip To Mars were popular, so why not have some more goofy lookin' rubber masks for a group of folks. The menial Zuggs pretty much just shuffle around at an almost 90 degree angle, but they are sportin' some spiffy two-tone capes and trousers. The Zuggs become erect when they revolt and that's a shame, because I was waiting for them to stay hunched over, shoot themselves in the feet, and then head butt their enemies into submission.

The serial is goofy fun, as airships take flight at a speed a snail would scoff at. I guess the airships suffer from the same thing that caused Buck to end up in the future: Suspended animation. Did I say goofy fun? Things get serious when Buck shouts, "Get on the floor!" Yep, he says that as gas is pouring out of the floor. Poor Buck, we knew ye well.
It's like Rodney King used to say, "Can't we all get a bong."

I agree, Stony. BUCK ROGERS is more fun than it has a right to be, considering its quite repetitive nature.

Always be yourself! Unless you can be Batman...then always be Batman!

Ace was a happy camper!

Yes, but those of us in the Squadron that have had to listen to our Ace Drummond sing are very unhappy campers. :X :'(
But he was such a merry cove one couldn't help but smile - depending on one's sense of humour, of course! :D

Yes, there is that! :D

Zorro (John Carroll) also warbles in Zorro Rides Again, or perhaps it was a notable crooner of the day! ^o)

We have a lot of in-jokes in the Squadron, where as friends, we love to tease each other, and are constantly needling each other. One of our favorites is to make it seem like Ace Drummond's singing is worse than a cat fight. You all know the Black Tiger was the villain of a James Horne serial, so I claim his gang is a bunch of idiots, so he claims my gang are idiots. After all he hired as his main henchman, one of my dead sons. You have to wonder about anyone who hires dead people for their gang. :D

There's a great foreward in Continued Next Week where the editor says, IIRC...

The stupidity of the villain in movie serials is only exceeded by the stupidity of the hero...allowing himself to be caught in traps every week! :D

Just finished chapter 3 of Blazing the Overland Trail. It definitely suffers for an over abundance of stock footage. It would be hard to call it a good serial. But it is reasonably entertaining and is far from the worst serial ever made. If I were to rate it for The Serial Squadron chat based on the first 3 chapters I would give it a 3.5 rating.

That's interesting, Marlin: the best thing I ever heard about that serial, which I suspect few fans have seen.

The Secret Code, after five chapters must be one of the five best serials I've ever seen (though to be fair, there's many, many that I've not seen). It is just so, so much fun. It embodies everything that's great about serials. I can't say enough positive things about this one. Sure it's a blatant rip-off of Spy Smasher. It doesn't matter. In many ways it's just as good as the serial that it emulates, and as the chapters continue to unfold, it may be better.

Smart of you to compare the two, Rodney: I had never thought of that, but it's perfect. Both are what a serial ought to be. I think Code is the best Bennett serial that survives, although old timers said that his silent serial The Green Archer was the best serial ever. Isn't it sad and strange that only one chapter survives?
