Glad to hear, 'cause that's our next FNF serial (Tim Tyler, not God). LAFE McKEE! Why, there used to be an Interstate Lafe McKee Fan Club. I think they got hit by a truck. |

I most heartily agree! And it is not all stock footage either. It looks like the panther is really there on the soundstage with Frankie. I was hoping that he would say something about filming TTL in the DVD extras, but he mostly talked about OTR and Tom Corbett. |

So far this month I've watched the following serials: 1) THE ADVENTURES OF SIR GALAHAD -and would never have finished it had it not been for the performances of Charles King and George Reeves. Slow biz with too much feeble sword-wagging by men with shell heads in clumsy looking tin-foil armor. When I see a serial hero sporting a shell head helmet his name had better be Commando Cody. 2) WILD WEST DAYS -thoroughly enjoyed this Johnny Mack Brown western, mostly due to Robert Kortman's terrific turn as good-guy/sidekick. Only time I've seen ol' One Eye as a good guy. Got this nice dvd from a beautiful if scratchy print from Mr. Orsak. 3) LOST JUNGLE -I might be in the minority but I enjoyed this one, too. While Clyde Beatty is no Slingin' Sammy Baugh, as a non-professional he comes across as a better actor than that old slice of ham, Wheeler Oakman. And speaking of feminine pulchtritude, Cecilia Parker is one of the most sumptuously endowed heroines in all of serialdom. God bless Nat Levine for dispensing with any undergarments that might dull Miss Parker's charming if less than subtle attributes. Currently Watching: THE MONSTER AND THE APE (Got it from Richard O. Excellent image quality. Fun serial. Enjoyable cast. Willie Best has the greatest line in the entire serial so far. He's even funnier than George Macready. Only 2 chapters left.) BRICK BRADFORD (currently up to chapter 5 or 6. Got this one from Trevor after buying a sub-sub-standard copy from a dealer-gonif on eBay. I never got past chapter 2 on the eBay purchased item, the image quality was so dismal. Trevor's issue is vastly superior to what I had. Amazing how much better this serial is now that I can actually tell Carol Forman from Gene Roth.) and MAN WITH THE STEEL WHIP (Used Republic Home Video VHS purchased on eBay. I'm currently up to chapter 4 and losing interest fast but Lane Bradford, Mauritz Hugo and Dale Van Sickel keep it about as interesting as your average episode of the 1960s era Warner Bros. tv series 'BRONCO". Also- NOT a Dick Simmons fan so far. "El Latigo", "Zorro" - a rose is a rose, isn't he?) |

Currently watching The Lightning Warrior as a spacer between the two Superman serials. I am fascinated to be seeing the original Rin Tin Tin. And Frankie Darro is always good. |

I'm slogging through THE VIGILANTE, which I vaguely recollected as being marginally superior to most other Katzman-produced serials from this period. It's okay, the main assets (for me, at least) being Ramsay Ames and all that great old music (from SPIDER'S WEB, SECRET OF TREASURE ISLAND, MANDRAKE THE MAGICIAN) in the score. |

Hoo, boy... I'm currently watching ('cause I got the DVDs) two of my least favorite serials, Superman and Son of Zorro. Plus G-Men vs. the Black Dragon (a good one), The Desert Hawk (a pretty good one), and just started Don Winslow of the Navy. Oh, and this coming weekend, our FNF gang is exposed to one of the great serials of all time! Oh, yeah, and of course there's also Darkest Africa, for my weekly blog. One chapter to go. Heck, that's a lot of serials, even for me! |

On a regular weekly basis, we're watching The Lightning Warrior, and Rin Tin Tin is good, if not as active as in his younger days. I wish more of his movies were readily available; at least Clash of Wolves is scheduled for broadcast on TCM in April. Also in the line-up: Flash Gordon, The Tiger Woman, and The Last Frontier. |

Finished MAN WITH THE STEEL WHIP and wound up enjoying Richard Simmons after finding out he was SGT. PRESTON OF THE YUKON -a childhood tv favorite. I'd give the serial a 4 out 10 just for the mis-use of I. Stanford Jolley (one measly chapter- the last one, too) and Tom Steele but they more than make up for it with plently of up-front camera time for Dale Van Sickel. I'd give it a 5. I'm currently watching FLYING G-MEN (thanks be to Trevor) and having a good time with it even if I'm not that big a fan of aerial adventures. Not much of a James Craig fan, either. Also watching THE PHANTOM RIDER (1946 Republic -pre-recorded RHV vhs), and I really dig that wacked out Indian mask. That mask makes the serial for me so far... that mask, Wally Wales, and LeRoy Mason. |

I'm currently moving the rest of my VHS serials onto DVD and I'm watching The Whispering Shadow. Finished watching Riding with Buffalo Bill. Thank God for the Deadwood Dick stock footage and I like Marshall Reed. Anyone remember him on the TV Show The Lineup? Barcroft |

I have to admit, it's become somewhat of a chore to get in my nightly serial chapter, mainly because I'm watching several not-so-good chapterplays. I've seen Son of Zorro and Superman before, and I'm only watching 'em now because I have the darn DVDs and, dang it, I don't like to let DVDs go to waste. I will admit, I keep an electronic Yahtzee game on my lap for when my mind starts to wander, which it invariably does. I am not certain I'll finish either serial. Superman is particularly grating... Carol Forman acts as if the director told her, "Pretend you have a wax mask on and if you show any emotional it'll crack." Don Winslow of the Navy may be a good serial, but the Alpha print is so bad who can tell? I'm nearly finished (2 chapters to go) of The Desert Hawk, an okay if silly and slow-moving serial. Reminds me of how much Columbia lost when they lost James Horne, who would've turned this serial into a masterpiece (remember, he directed -- and appeared in! -- Beau Hunks with Laurel & Hardy). G-Men vs. the Black Dragon is of course prime Republic and good fun. Ditto Daredevils of the Red Circle, our FNF serial. And I'm one episode in to Hop Harrigan, and hate Hop. William Bakewell's wavy hair and pretty-boy looks make me want to barf. What in the HELL did Jennifer Holt ever see in this guy? |

Jennifer herself didn't have a satisfactory explanation for her attraction to Billy Bakewell. The first time I asked her about it -- many years before I met and became friendly with Bill -- she just sighed and said, "Well, that was a mistake." Later she told me that he was fun to be with and was very well connected to what we today call Old Hollywood. (For example, he was friendly with Loretta Young and her sisters, as well as John Wayne, Doug Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, and Buddy Rogers, to name a few.) But they weren't really compatible, and it didn't take either of them long to figure that out. I never asked Bill about Jennifer; ours was a more casual, superficial friendship and I didn't feel comfortable inquiring about an earlier, failed marriage. |

On HGB3's comment above: nice to read that TCM will be showing more serials. I saw Clash of the Wolves at Cinevent, the annual film festival in Columbus a few years ago. I was very disappointed. Would you believe they have Rinty running around in a disguise in the film?? Yes, you read that right. Here's hoping better Rin Tin Tin films will appear in the future. After it runs - why don't you report back here with your critique? |

Sarge, I think you misread his post... the "lineup" those serials are in are on his viewing schedule, not TCM's. I saw Clash of the Wolves at the Castro in SF, and I loved it... Hey, it not only has Rin-Tin-Tin in it, it's got June "Miss Crabtree" Marlowe! |
