One downside to THE PERILS OF PAULINE I forgot to mention is Sonny Ray as the comedy relief. He is absolutely terrible, and one of the most annoying characters ever. No wonder he only made a few films. He is scared of everything. A real pain in the ass.

I love it too, but you have to keep in mind it's a send-up, not a regular serial. It has some great fights and cliffhangers, and the later chapters are, for once, better than the first few.
Life is just a bowl of cherries, it's too mysterious, don't take it serious...

This serial also marks the worst appearance by "a mummy" on celluloid.

Come on Pa. Was he even more annoying than me when I worked with Dick Tracy? You all pick on me for getting my hand caught in the vase. ^o) :'( :'( :X :)

I was thinking the same thing, Kan. I have not seen PoP yet, but your performance with Dick was truly awful.

I agree about Burnette's performance in Dick Tracy.

As a matter of fact, there should be a new award - The Smiley
awarded to the year's worst performance.

At least it gave you a chance to see Smiley wearing something besides western clothes and that stupid hat. I almost didn't recognize him in a suit.

You guys need to be reminded of the absolute worst in serial "comedy relief"? No prob, I can handle that in three words: Sid Friggin' Saylor.

Syd Saylor was in LOST JUNGLE and MYSTERY MOUNTAIN, both Mascot 1934, but he was much better in BRENDA STARR, REPORTER. No gang, Sonny Ray is even worse than Smiley or Syd.
Chapter four of PoP had a couple of interesting moments. They are in the jungles of Borneo, and arrive at a tribal village. For once in a serial, there are a lot of women in the tribe. In one scene Sonny is sent to the river to bring back water, and a lady with back to the camera walks past him. Gang, she is topless, really topless. There are course the customary stock scenes of wild animals thrown in, including hippos and zebras. Hippos and zebras in Borneo????

Personally I would have thought someone would have mentioned Oscar and Elmer. They are to me a real scene stopper. :X :'(

I liked Burnette in Dick Tracy, not so much the physical humor, but for his scenes with the kid who played Junior.
It's like Rodney King used to say, "Can't we all get a bong."

Saylor is so awful in Lost Jungle that in my official review of that serial I suggested the possibility that I might go to Mr. Saylor's grave, dig up his bones, and kick his ass.

To say something negative finally about The Secret Code, I must say that the cliffhanger resolution for chapter 13 (the beginning of chapter 14) really, really SUCKED.
