I don't think he utilized heckholes, he just was one.

Now, that is a great quote. Your own, Mr P?

I fear so, Mr. Bat.

I finished The Indians Are Coming and, while not the worst serial I've ever seen is hardly the best. Though, when you consider its 1930 vintage, it's not bad for its time. Typical attitudes of the time. All the Indians are evil and lust after white women. The Indian chief's son is name Howling Wolf but he doesn't sing any blues during the picture. A disappointment. ;)

I would have hoped for a chorus of "Spoonful" at the very least.

Mr. Bat, you may quote me at will -- no need to ask.

I finally got around to watching chapters 4 and 5 of Terry and the Pirates. It's starting to grow on me a bit as the action has been heavy and maintains a high intensity that propels the proceedings.

SPOILER: I must say that chapter 4 ends with one of the more blatent cheats that I've seen in awhile. As the chapter closes Pat and Terry are standing in a shallow river surrounded by bands of baddies on both banks. One of the baddies has hand grenades (or some type of small explosive) and tosses one at Pat and Terry to put an end to our heroes. We see the grenade land in the water 2 feet from our boys and then we see an explosion as the chapter fades out. Chapter 5 opens by rewriting history. As the chapter unfolds we see the baddie tossing the explosive but in this alternate universe Pat catches it and tosses it back at the villains before it explodes. What an obvious cheat. I even sped in reverse to replay the end of chapter 4 to make sure I remembered it correctly.

This is one of my favorite subjects when it comes to cliffhangers. What are some of your favorite "cheat" endings?

I mentioned elsewhere that Buck Rogers ends one episode with sidekick Buddy taking a ray gun blast and crumpling to the floor, seemingly dead. The next episode shows the blast missing as Buddy dives out a window untouched.

Of course there are probably dozens of cliffhangers with the car going over the cliff. Next episode shows the good guy either jumping from the car just before (even if previously tied up or unconscious), or simply getting out of the wrecked car and rubbing the back of his neck.

The ending to one of the chapters of The Adventures Of Cartain Marvel shows a car wrecking into the side of a building, then the following chapter show CM showing up in time to avoid the crash.
It's like Rodney King used to say, "Can't we all get a bong."

Horne frequently spoofed serial villains, but this one time he spoofed the hero: some folks hated that, so Terry has a weird reputation. I like it for what it is -- a relatively high budget serial with some laughs and plenty of action, that doesn't fall off after the first four chapters, as many do. It has the Columbia virtues -- quirky scripting that sometimes seems tongue in cheek and other times doesn't, plus a tendency to avoid stock footage -- as well as the Columbia faults: poor acting and the overuse of a few music cues.

I will have to make TERRY AND THE PIRATES the next Columbia in my serial rotation, and see what all the fuss is about. Hearing it is not a typical serial is always intriguing.

I saw it after hearing nothing good about it and was surprised how bad it wasn't. By that time Gravy had succeeded in turning me on to Horne's serials, so I was prepared to like it and did, though I can sure see how a sane person could find the Terry character irksome.

Terry is definitely a hero that I wouldn't shed any tears for if he failed to escape one of the cliffhangers. His voice goes very nasal when stressed, and he's always stressed.

I finished up Terry and the Pirates and overall it was fairly enjoyable. William Tracy as Terry was consistently annoying but Jeff York, as his pal Pat, stood in as the strong noble type of hero. Dick Curtis enjoys a campy freedom that make so many of the Columbia serial villains a tongue in cheek treat. It was better than I was expecting with solid cliffhangers (and the one blatent cheatmentioned in a previous post). I'd give it the thumbs up, especially for those that are predisposed towards Horne's Columbia style.

I rank it as one of those adaptations I'd like a lot more if I didn't know the original. China became a generic serial jungle, Dragon Lady a generic white goddess, and so on. At the very least Dragon Lady should have been an actual pirate, sexy as they could allow.
