There was a live chat at Home Theatre Forums last night and the guests were from Warners' TV and Animation departments. Before the chat began, there were a few announcements and one important one was that Warners had secured the official DVD rights to all of King Features' Popeye cartoons. Warners will begin immediately on restoration work and they plan to release the first Popeye DVD set sometime next year.

Hey, Rogmeister, were you at the HTF chat last night, too?

There were some great announcements, don't you think?

If you were there, what did you think of those EVERWOOD fans? Talk about pushing your luck.

I was there for awhile. I was even going to ask a question...mainly about if Maverick or any other westerns were coming. Then someone else asked about Maverick and I left soon after.

Yeah, I tried to get a question in there, too, but I got shutout every time. Luckily, like you, I had all my questions asked by others. The continued non-movement on a release of the 1960s Batman series was the low-point for me. The combination of the Popeye announcement and Warners continued customer service efforts with their disc replacement programs was the highlight.

I remember something about a corrected disc on one of the Looney Tunes sets. I'm a little vague on what the problem is. Could you explain that? I need to go back and see if mine needs replacing...

If that is from the chat TheDigitalBits.com will post a transcript.

Rogmeister, I recall them mentioning a problem, too. I believe on disc 2 (Vol. 2?), but from what I recall, they did not specify the problem.

another announcement on our end is we have a replacement disk program in place for Looney Tunes Golden Collection Vol 2, Disc 4. The discs were incorrectly manufactured with some cartoons in the interlaced rather than the progressive format. We will provide you with info on how consumers can send in for replacement discs at no charge.

Interlaced is the format used in most TVs. You actually only scan half the lines in an image then in a second pass you scan between the lines of the image. In progressive scan you scan all the lines in a single pass. Interlaced images are not as clear and can produce flicker in the image.

You would only notice a difference in the DVD if you have a DVD player and TV supports progressive scan. I'd recommend getting the corrected disc any way as most new DVD plays support progressive scan and your next TV likely will.

Thank you. I'll look into that once they announce how it'll be done.

My thanks, too Marlin. It seems it would be worth the effort to get the replacement discs.

Thats wonderful, as I have some on VHS, but they are starting to fade.
I hope that they are uncut, and complete.

This is huge news, as we shouldn't forget that Popeye cartoons were never released on VHS aside from a few dupey PD titles.

Thank you. I'll look into that once they announce how it'll be done.

When that replacement accouncement is made would someone please post it here as I generally do not visit those boards mentioned and I have the Warner Brothers Looney Tune vol. 2 set.

Thanks

Kan
