Well, okay, not exactly, but capsule comments from his super-hero film reviews are online HERE. I agree with him that Spider-Man 2 and Batman Begins are the cream of the crop, but he liked the first Superman movie with Chris Reeve more than I did. The worst? Well, I haven't seen a bunch of these, so it may be Catwoman or Elektra or Daredevil, but I have trouble believing they're as bad as Mystery Men. |

I haven't seen Catwoman or Elektra or Daredevil. But I could easily believe they are worse than Mystery Men. Mystery Men is supposed to be a parody. As a parody I found it mildly funny. |

LG, That first Superman movie is one of my all-time favorites. I agree with Ebert's point that what makes that movie and is missing to varying degrees in its sequels is the wit. The movie always has its tongue firmly planted in its cheek. I am looking forward to the new Richard Donner cut of Superman II, due out on DVD later this year, to see if the sequel will have the missing wit that I think owed a lot to Donner's direction. |

Well, that wasn't really worth the wait. Some good scenes, but basically Superman saves the day the same way he did in the first film. So, if Donner had kept making them, Superman's way out of every crisis would have been to go back in time. Wow, what a hero. |

I think this is discussed elsewhere on this Board, but a capsule recap: Superman and Superman II were filmed simulataneously, but as the budgets increased, the producers decided to finish I and hold off completing II until I's box office was ascertained; they got cold feet and thought that they might have a bomb on their hands. Superman I was to end with a cliffhanger; the three villains freed from the Phantom Zone. The producers decided not to go that route, but to "lift" the already-filmed ending of Superman II -Lois's death and the time-travel thing - and end Superman I that way. Which is why both Superman and the Director's Cut of Superman II have the same ending. That said - Superman II, the Donner cut, is excellent, easily the best of the Christopher Reeve films. I love it, and rank it with the two latest Batman films, Spider-Man II, and The Adventures of Captain Marvel as the best comic book adaptations for the big screen. |

Yep, you said the same stuff elsewhere, and I said I didn't care that budgets, studios whatever caused the ending change for Part 1. The fact remains that is the ending, which reduces the impact for the ending in the Donner version of Part 2. But, I do agree that Supes 2 is up there with the best of them, it's just below the best of the best, is all. |
