Thanks!! Your previous posting brought back some Halloween (my favorite day of the year as a child) memories of my own. When I was a kid, it was actually before you could buy outfits in a store…. so your mom made you one…. or you had none. Fortunately, my mom seemed to enjoy making a yearly costume for me…. & I wasn’t easy. I remember one year wanting to dress up like the Lone Ranger (as depicted by Charles Flanders in the Sunday Hearst comics). Well, turns out that was fairly simple. Mom found an old straw hat that was painted white. This coupled with a dime store black mask & jeans was a fair facsimile. Only thing was, I needed a red shirt (that was the color in the funnies). So, Mom took an old white shirt & dyed it red. It was kinda faded, but I thought it was terrific. I believe everyone knew who I was supposed to be. When my Mom got older (& I was an adult), she delighted in dressing up (like you) for the young trick-or-treaters. She had a great witches hat & was naturally slim (what the hell happened to me?) so she brought off the witch role great. Forget whether she used makeup or not, but she used to say, “At my age, I can easily pass for a witch.” And she did!! My favorite Halloween story from my adult years happened quite a while ago. Various kids were coming to the door for goodies & when the bell rang again, I was ready with the candies. Imagine my surprise, when I saw two adult women wearing stockings over their head, visibly gassed & holding out two champagne glasses. Turned out, they worked where I did & decided this was a helluva good way to get free drinks on Halloween. They definitely got at least one from me…. &, of course, I joined them!! p.s. Hope Mr. Natural returns one of these days!!! |

I'll never forget it. An African-American buddy said to me, "Now they're killing WHITE kids." mort, Smokey's avatar is Mr. Natural, a guru who tries to turn the hopelessly alienated Flakey Foont on to the real world in issue after issue of Zap Comix. The Complete R. Crumb is still available and might reward your inspection. |

Oh, I'm VERY familiar with Mr. Natural's adventures.... both with & without Flaky. One of my favorite short strips of his was "Mr. Natural Does the Dishes." I thought Gilbert Shelton's "Furry Freak Bros." adventures frequently reminded me of Carl Barks. But Crumb reminded me of...... no one!!! Unique!! Ohhhh, I get it. You thought my avatar reference referred to Crumb's guru. It didn't I referred to the avatar he used BETWEEN the two times he's used Natural's portrait!! |

I was from that era too, but I didn't care at all about dressing up. Screw that! The old "Lone Ranger" type masks were good enough for me. Do you remember all the dry cereal boxes used to have masks on the back of them that you could cut out and tie a string on to wear, around Halloween time? I think I even wore one of those one year. For me, it was all about the free candy! |

I did blackface, and my best friend Junior Anderson was with me wearing flour on his face and a clown suit. This was before the civil rights movement hit our town, but we were pretty cutting edge now that I think about it...at least he was. At the time I just thought he was being cool as usual. The subtleties went over my head. I was the fox, and he was the crow, and that's pretty much the story of my childhood. He was the reason I knew about music. When civil rights did hit, his mom and dad moved away and said we couldn't play together any more. I wonder where he is. |
