On a rare occasion, like today. One of the rides had fork issues, and I drove it to the shop. If you hadn't made your last post, this probably wouldn't have happened. |

When I worked at Ralphs, I used to watch the guys driving the forklifts & think, "that looks like a fun way to make a living." But, I suppose like everything else, it gets boring after a while. During lunch, a bunch of us would go out to the yard & watch the trailers being moved. The "yardbirds" drove special tractors for the purpose & never left the yard. Why these trailers were constantly being moved is beyond me... but the dexterity of some of these guys was awesome. I believe they got bonuses based on the number of assignments completed, so speed was of the essence. One guy, who we dubbed "Wolfman" because of his beard & rather fearsome visage, was especially impressive. He'd back those trailers into the narrowest spaces at speeds that made us gasp. I think he knew we were watching his performance & liked to show off a bit... as well as earn those extra bucks!! Edited by mort bakaprevski, Oct 2 2009, 08:58 PM.

I've done it, and it is a bore after a while. Management on the other hand, has a few serene moments, but I'm like a bag of popcorn in the microwave around here. Plus, if I was on a forklift, I'd probably weigh another 20 or 30 pounds. I walk all over Hell and back, but my day cruises by quickly, and I like it like that. I hate to stand around at work and have time crawl. |

The only thing I have against yard jockeys is that they let guys work as over the road truck drivers that should never be allowed near a tractor trailer. I worked for 15 years at a farm machinery dealership. We frequently had drivers come in who were literally incapable of backing their rig up. If it weren't for yard jockeys at the terminals they typically went to they would either have actually had to learn how to back the rig up or found another line of work. |

I have seen many poor drivers, so many, that I don't get near them on the interstate. Mort, Have you ever attended Cinespia? For Balconeers not in the know, Cinespia is a group who show films outdoors at a cemetery, Hollywood Cemetery I think. TCM is currently running a short piece about it. |

Oh yeah!! The yard guys only moved trailers owned by Ralphs. Outside suppliers had to back up their own trailers to the docks... & sometimes it was pretty pathetic to see!! |

No!! I, too, just heard about it on TCM. I believe that cemetery is the one that's adjacent to the Paramount studios. Never been in it, but the profusion of palm trees, etc. always looked beautiful when driving down Gower. I need to find out more about it... but hell, I also need to find out more about the Echo Park Film Society. Just heard about that as well & I've been living in Echo Park more decades than I care to reveal. |

The Los Angeles graveyards can be fun. I've been to Hollywood Cemetery (now renamed Hollywood Forever) and it's fascinating, worth a visit for Doug Fairbanks' tomb alone. Then there are Charlie Chaplin's mom's humble stone, and Tully Marshall's equally humble one, which reads Tully Marshall -- beloved actor. Harry Cohn's there, in a huge, vulgar tomb, and Tyrone Power's gracefully carved stone is also among the big 'uns. Jayne Mansfield's is pink and always decorated with flowers. (Her son's a florist but I doubt if he brings the plastic ones). I recommend the place to any movie buff who wants to visit the permanent homes of the stars. It's not depressing like Forest Lawn. I did find L. Frank Baum at Forest Lawn, and learned that we have the same birthday, though I never found Bogie. Valentino and June Mathis are near each other in a mausoleum there, which kind of throws doubt on the "lady in black" story, at least as told in the movie. I think I posted on this before, somewhere. |

IMO - Politics become "Politics" when we stray from the facts and get into interpretation- people celebrating a high holy day and people throwing rocks are both facts- now as to why and who is right- therein lies the problem |

I am offended, OFFENDED!, sir, that you would introduce politics into this innocent discussion of Heckle and Jeckle! You, sir, should be banned from this website! [Translation: Yeah, you posted onto the wrong thread. And I am so tired of this bullshit about what we can or cannot say.] |

Neither, that is borrowed from the film Caddyshack. One of those art house films! |
