Do you know what a “flash mob” is? Well, neither do I. But, I guess I was part of one last Friday evening. A friend of mine, who I am trying to put a vocal group together with, sent me an email inviting me to engage in this event he was organizing. He said he was inspired by this New York group: http://improveverywhere.com/2008/01/31/frozen-grand-central/ His idea was to have a 50-man singing group do a spontaneous version of The Drifters’ “Under the Boardwalk.” When I asked him what the purpose of this was, the answer I got back really didn’t compute successfully. It seemed to be something akin to what we woulda called a ratf**k back at USC many moons ago. I’ve sorta outgrown that kinda stuff, BUT the guy is a helluva bass & they are VERY hard to come by… so I acquiesced. At any rate, I braved the rush hour traffic Friday eve to drive out to Santa Clarita (where the Six Flags amusement park is). We met at a neutral site to rehearse. I had studied the music & was ready to go… only to have our leader inform us that there would also be some simple choreography as well. Just what a guy with two left feet wants to hear at the eleventh hour. Oh well (sighhhhh)!! We went over the song about 4 or 5 times & then left to go to the mall where we were to perform. Our leader had everything planned to the minute. At 6:47, we would perform in front of Edward’s Theatre. Exactly ½ hour later, we would repeat our act at the food court. Then, ½ hour later, we would give our final performance at the merry-go-round. Surprisingly, everything went pretty much according to plan. Of course, there weren’t 50 singers, but there were about 30… which wasn’t bad. After our last rendition, I noticed our leader conferring with mall security. I approached & asked what it was all about. He said the security man had told him that the sheriff’s department had been informed of our activity & that if we did one more performance we would all be arrested. This seemed to justify the whole evening for my friend. I just headed for the nearest bar!! |

*Whispering* Don't tell Jim Jones which color Kool Aid it is! Mort, So you're going out doing a fun singing gig, doing a friend a favor, and you're close to getting arrested??? It sounds like you're hanging out with MY friends. I bet you have to really push the memory banks to come up with the last time you were threatened with arrest... If ever!

Ohhhh, it was definitely a l-o-o-o-o-ng time ago, but I can certainly remember BOTH events quite vividly. The first time I was in high school & we went up to Hermosa Beach to hear the Lighthouse All-Stars. The cops actually took us inside the police department.... because we were out after curfew. I think they just wanted to scare us... as they ultimately let us leave. After that, when we wanted to hear the All-Stars, we went to the Sunday afternoon concerts. The next time, I was in college. Had been out drinking beer with a friend (I think on phoney i.d.'s). After a somewhat wild drive, with my friend at the wheel, he managed to drive the car into a ditch. When we finally managed to extricate the car, we found one of the wheels hopelessly bent inwards. Just about that time, the cops arrived. They asked who had been driving. My friend admitted that he was at the wheel... & they immediately put him into their car. When I asked how I was gonna get home (it was now about 2:30 a.m.), they asked me how far I lived from where we were. I said that it was about 2 miles. They suggested I start walking. The next day I drove up to Santa Ana to bail him out of jail. I'm not sure why my parents didn't kill me... but they didn't!!! Edited by mort bakaprevski, Oct 27 2009, 04:43 PM.
