Some info has been posted to the Laurel & Hardy newsgroup by Laughsmith's Paul E. Gierucki, regarding the upcoming Our Gang Collection (Laughsmith is the people that gave us that wonderful "Fatty" Arbuckle boxed set); while no release date has yet been announced... "The Our Gang transfers have been completed and everything looks stunning in HD. We expect to include about 34 titles and a large selection of extras. More if it can be made to fit. This is our first foray into the world of HD and there are a lot of variables, appropriate compression rates are still something of an unknown quantity, and it is hard to gauge just what will fit comfortably on dual layer discs until we actually do the tests. We are coming at this technology blind and I am having to develop some new methods and standards as things progress. Lots of trial and error. Rest assured, however, that image quality is ALWAYS the first consideration. To that end we are also looking into the possibility of producing Blu-ray discs. Classic films deserve the same treatment that current releases are getting and the best way to reach new audiences, IMHO, is to stay on the cutting edge. Onward and upward." |

I have only seen a few silent Little Rascals, and I would like to see more. They had some great actors like Farina, Jackie Condon, Joe Cobb and Mickey Daniels. And Mary Korman. I will have to once again beseech my Library. |

This is one of the most important DVD releases ever. More than any other movies the Our Gangs are a window on the past as it was. I've only seen two of the silent ones so my anticipation is boundless. I'm also very glad this will be HDTV -- it really seems to be the coming thing at last! |

This sounds great, LG, as I have their Fatty Arbuckle set and it is excellent. I have never seen a silent Our Gang, so this will be a treat. But...I do have one question. They say that these discs will be HD, does that mean they won't play in my good old DVD player? |

Last week Laughsmith's Paul E. Gierucki had posted at alt.movies.silent that they have a signed broadcast deal in place with TCM for the Our Gang silent collection. Good news! |

Great news! Y'know, one thing about the Our Gang silents... whereas some of the other silent film comedy series seemed to get better as they went along, I have seen probably a couple of dozen silent Our Gang films over the years, and always thought the earlier films (1922-1925 or so) were better than the later silents. I wonder if I'll still think that when the set comes out. |
