In the current issue of Western Clippings Boyd Magers is reporting that PBS is reviving the 80s series "Matinee at the Bijou".

It is scheduled to start airing in 2007, produced in HD and hosted by Debbie Reynolds.

Each two hour episode will feature a color cartoon; a chapter of the serial "Flash Gordon Conquors the Universe"; a short film; and a feature film.

Each show will be released on DVD after the initial airing.

I sure hope they use better prints. Most of the prints they had on the original series were Alpha quality, if you know what I mean.

If they're releasing the shows on DVD, it would be commercial suicide to use those moth-eaten prints. The Godawfulness of Alphas and Madacys is linked to their price.

I would think the prints would have to be pretty good if they intend to broadcast them in High Definition.

Here, here!!! I used to love that show, and especially the theme. Being in my late thirties, BIJOU was my introduction to serials. The one I most vividly remember from the show was ZORRO'S FIGHTING LEGION.

Great to hear the Bijou will be on again. I sent for all the season program booklets from the 80's Bijou shows. They're great and one has all the words of the theme song.
Hey Gravy, if I send you the words would you want to post em?

Would I post 'em? I'd not only do that, I'd sing 'em! If we could only get Ace Drummond over here to do harmony...

I wonder if they will show the whole feature and not an edited version, and Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe?
Not a very good serial, and is easily available.
And there should be a Cartoon and Newsreels.
I hope the choice of Features is better than the choice of Serials.
Is there a site where one can see whats coming?

ilive4mycats:  This is the information that was published in Western Clippings.  The article didn't mention a newsreel and it seemed to indicate that there would be a chapter per week.

But surely they could find a better serial than that .
Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe has a few good things, but overall is not all that good.
I would much rather see Spy Smasher, The Lone Ranger or Overland Mail.
Or Captain America.

It's a rights thing, Ilive. The copyright on this serial has lapsed. And come on, it's not that bad -- has wonderful stock footage from German silents. Can you think of a better Public Domain serial? Well, OK, maybe ZORRO'S FIGHTING LEGION.

Another thing might be name recognition...who has not heard of Flash Gordon. OK, the Lone Ranger has very high name recognition but there is no good print out there. Spy Smasher has limited name recognition. It could also be that whoever made the decision is a 30 something that kind of knows about Flash Gordon and never heard of Spy Smasher or Captain America. Unfortunately we are 50 years removed from the very last serial ever produced. Serials probably are just some quaint movies that the 30 somethings have heard their fathers and grandfathers talk about but know nothing about.

‘Matinee at the Bijou’ was a poor man’s version of what is now Warner Night at the Movies.

All the programming was severly edited to fit into a 90 minute format. 'Don Winslow of the Navy' was reduced to about 5 chapters, and Richard Arlen second features, which couldn’t have been more than 65m to begin with, clocked in at about 45m.

I applaud the concept, but if they want my money for DVD’s, they’re going to have to come up with uncut versions and reasonable prints.
