The definative version of The Hound of the Baskervilles will for me always be the Basil Rathbone version. I've seen a few others - the Hammer/Cushing one, the Stewart Granger/William Shatner one, tried to watch the Jeremy Brett one but I confess I couldn't stand it.... And you guys living in England are going to get a treat...not a film but the play by Clive Francis, scheduled to start touring in January...I"m so envious! |

I rather like the Peter Cushing film. There have been quite a few others. I've heard the Russian version is excellent. I also remember catching part of a British miniseries starring Tom Baker of Doctor Who fame as everyone's favorite consulting detective. Also, being a fan of Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, I must mention the 1978 spoof. Of course, I really shouldn't, because it was easily the worst thing they ever did. The movie is an absolute disaster but the kind of disaster you can't turn away from. |

Resurrecting this old thread since I just watched the Hammer version of "Hound of the Baskervilles". I've now seen the 1939, 1959, and Jeremy Brett TV versions, and they all have their merits. The Peter Cushing version is typical lush Hammer, very lovely, precise and not too exciting -- but then the source material itself isn't very exciting anymore. And the more said about Christopher Lee the better! He's handsome to look at. Most of the time he walked through the role, but he had a few moments of excellent acting. |

The German version from 1936 has great production values that almost rivals the Fox Rathbone version. The Russian version from 1979 isn't too bad. Cushing did two versions. Hammer film has a different flavor, but the TV production from 1968 is far superior than any other Cushing 1968 TV broadcasts of Sherlock Holmes. |

Thanks for the heads-up, I hadn't even thought about checking the TV series' episodes to see if there was a production of "Hound". Looks like there are Region 2 DVDs available! |

I bought mine and it was Region 1. The Hound TV production has a funny story. Peter Cushing recalled in his autobiography that it was the first of 17 TV productions in the late 1960s and the budget was extremely impressive. Superb production and sets. When they finished, the producer sat everyone down and admitted that the entire season's worth of episodes now had to be done on a shoestring budget. Seems they blew the entire season budget on that one production and darned if the others I have seen are not cheap, stale and limited sets. If you're only going to watch one of the Sherlock Holmes TV episodes from the late 1960s with Cushing, only watch the Hound of the Baskervilles production. |
