Is that for this recent set you have been mentioning? If so, that's a good deal and I'll add it to my next DVD shopping list. |

Yeah, that's what Amazon.com is selling it for right now. Twenty bucks for five features and two shorts. Sheesh! Who'd a thought the Lions Gate people would be so stupid? (Hee hee hee) |

OK -- ici is la poop: La fille de eau (Whirlpool of Fate) comes from a 35mm American print. Interesting thing, they had to translate the intertitles back into French. It's a good movie. Nana is from a gorgeous original gold-toned print. Really fun to watch. Charleston Parade (Sur un air de Charleston) is an extremely rare short, really more like a home movie than a commercial film. It's too contrasty, but that may just be the way it was shot. This was the one disappointing film in the collection; it really shows its age. I don't have the faintest idea what it's supposed to be about. (La Petit Marchande d'Allumettes (The Little Match Girl) is a gorgeously photographed version of the Hans Christian Andersen tale, and the print does it justice. I'm really glad I can watch this whenever I want to -- it's a pip. I haven't watched La Marseillaise all the way through, but saw enough to know I want to see the rest. Fascinating stuff about the French Revolution. If you don't like the print, too bad. This one came from the Cinematheque Nationale, and it's the best out there. Second generation I'd say. Le Testament de Docteur Cordelier (The Doctor's Horrible Experiment) is absolutely fascinating. I couldn't turn it off and stayed up way too late. A horror flick by Jean Renoir? Bring it on! Maybe he was inspired by Hitchcock's shooting Psycho like a TV film. The print looks new. This movie is worth the price of the whole box. Le Caporal epingle (The Elusive Corporal) looks like new. The movie holds up beautifully, though I hadn't seen it in 35 years. It's properly letterboxed too. I haven't yet watched the documentary at the end of the set, but I'll report here when I do. Don't know if the sale at Amazon is still on, but Panzer recommends a buy in any case. This isn't arty stuff, it's real movies by a great moviemaker. Except that Charleston short -- that one is kinda chi chi. No complaints whatsoever about this set. |
