Yeah. They were trying to sue McNeil because the dumbass was actually offering subscriptions to his magazine with the Disney parody as a selling point. Fortunately, it was just a long battle in court that caused Disney's wallet to bleed and they finally said "Look, McNeil, just stop doing this shit and we'll drop everything." He did. There was a thread on GAC Forums with some right-winged fundamentalist copyright enthusiasts that a comic depicting Mickey giving cunnilingus to Minnie was worthy of our government's time in the 1970s. Cause you know there was nothing going on in the world at that time more worthy of their attention... Here's Wood's shrine. A masterpiece. http://bp0.blogger.com/_Rs53-MPsJaI/Rleyx_...0-h/1woodis.jpg |

Thadk - that cartoon scene is unbelieveable. I'm no prude at all, but Disney has given millions upon millions of people great family entertainment for decades, so something like this is such a cheapshot. Who drew that and for what reason? |

As we stated before, that was rendered by Wally Wood, famous EC (Mad, etc.) illustrator. Why he did it??? Well, you'll have to ask someone more familiar with Mr. Wood's psyche than I am. |

Wood did it for Steve Krassner's The Realist, shortly after Walt's death. Says Krassner... "This was a few years after Time's famous "God Is Dead" cover, and it occurred to me that Disney was indeed God to Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy -- the whole crowd -- he had been their creator and had repressed their baser instincts, but now they could shed all their inhibitions and participate in a magnificent mass binge." |

Though it wasn't his idea, Wood wouldn't take credit publicly for the drawing for years. Disney only really got mad when a company was making color posters out of it. Jim Korkis has a beautiful one of it on the way to his bathroom. I love how passerby glance at it, thinking it's just some typical Disney poster, than do a double-WTF-take when they see Goofy's mounted Minnie on a cash register...

Thad, I see we were both quoted over on Barrier's site yesterday. I'm the quote just above you. The guy with the somewhat Shakespearian name (my real one). It's been years since I've seen MOTOR MANIA, but I'll never forget the scene of Mr. Walker trying to get his car, from a dead stop, into a solid wall of rapidly moving traffic. I'm sure the Pasadena Freeway was the inspiration for this scene. This was the first freeway built in SoCal & it had on-ramps that ended at a stop sign right where the freeway began. Art imitating life!! |

Morty, if you need copies of those Goofy cartoons to refresh your memory, let me know. I know the Goofy set is hard to find priced reasonably. They're definitely among the best that Disney did. |

Thad, thanks for the letting me know about the Goofy availability... but I've never really been terribly fond of the Disney shorts. Warners, Fleischer, Avery (MGM), Hanna-Barbera & even Lantz & Paul Terry seemed to have more action & were just plain funnier!!! |

Barrier has an interesting article on his site about Philip Glass being commissioned to write a new musical work about Walt Disney. It's to be based on a "fictionalized biography" of Walt Disney by Peter Stephan Jungk, titled 'The Perfect American." Barrier seems to be a bit negative about the book... although he admits he has never read it. I'm wondering if Thadk or any of the other animation experts at this site HAVE read it... and what they might think of it?? |

Well, it seems that Michael has now read "The Perfect American" and (big surprise), he still doesn't like it. I'm still interested in getting Thad or Rod's (or anyone else, for that matter) take on the book. Where are you guys??? |

I could care less about reading it. Walt is a weird figure. Whenever he's being discussed, whether being praised or bashed, I want to voice an opinion in the minority. He was solely responsible for the decline in the short cartoons. I don't think the artform would have ever advanced if it weren't for the early sound Mickey's though. |

How do you mean Walt was "solely responsible for the decline in the short cartoons", Thad? I would have said post-war economics and television. |

What I mean is his own studio's shorts. It's fairly clear Disney was not giving them the full attention they deserved, which is why they had a high miss rate in the 1940s. Based on what I know, Disney felt it was unnecessary to emulate the Warner shorts and discouraged Jack Kinney and Jack Hannah from doing so. (Kinney was actually offered a unit at MGM by Tex Avery in 1951, but declined it. Kinney was thanked for his loyalty by being stuck on shit projects after the short department closed, then finally thrown unceremoniously out on his ass in 1957.)
