thad, why does Universal hate the Lantz cartoons??? Elucidate, por favor!!

I'm not entirely sure. Guess they don't see market potential in them.

I saw Bob Jaques at the Comic-Con, and he told me when he was working on the [horrible] new cartoons, he proposed a laserdisc compilation of the Lantz cartoons, to get people reacquainted with those characters. Universal gave him a flat-out no, that they wanted nothing to do with the old cartoons. They also shot down his proposal of doing new Andy Panda shorts.

THANK YOU. I was hoping that somebody that enjoys these cartoons would step up 'n' defend 'em. You'll note that even those of us who don't care for Lantz cartoons supported the project by purchasin' the darn thing!

LG, I can appreciate you supporting this, but that doesn't mean we all have to.

There are so many things out there that I DO want that it would make absolutely no sense for me to divert my limited funds from those purchases in favor of supporting a release that I already know I won't enjoy and probably wouldn't watch all the way through even once.

Hey, for those who enjoy Woody and his gang, I am thrilled it was released. I know the feeling of finally getting a legitimate, uncut DVD release of a favorite that I never thought would see the light, when Sony released the first Batman serial a year or so ago. I just can't afford to support every niche release that comes down the pike.

Always be yourself! Unless you can be Batman...then always be Batman!

Continuing on with the set, tonight I watched two more Woody cartoons, the okay The Loan Stranger and the awful The Screwball. Much more interesting were the 1930 Oswald cartoon Spooks (not a good cartoon, but inasmuch as it's a parody of Phantom of the Opera, it held my interest; the unmasking scene is a direct steal from the Chaney version) and the Cartoon Classics Hollywood Bowl, a 1938 cartoon that seems to have directly inspired Fantasia! Plus there's a lot of Hollywood characters in cartoon form in it, including W.C. Fields, Charlie McCarthy, and Groucho Marx. Good stuff.
