From our friends at Inkwell Images, we’ve got a pair of fine cartoons starring Bud Fisher’s popular comic strip pair Mutt and Jeff. First up is the 1927 animated classic The Globe Trotters, as “Prof. Mutt and Little Jeff” travel around the world in a dirigible, stopping at the North Pole (where they find the I. Gypem Realty Company already set up to mortgage igloos), Russia, where the Cossacks are selling their beards to a mattress company, Switzerland, where they make swiss cheese by milking a goat, churning the milk, and then shooting the results full of bullets, Venice, where they navigate traffic on the canals, and then back home to Time Square, where they get run over by a subway. All in good fun. The next cartoon is the 1930 animated classic The Globe Trotters. Same thing, only Bud Fisher and company took the 1927 short, added sound and music, and retraced the darn thing in color. It looks like crap, is the noisiest cartoon I’ve ever heard, and it’s missing the Russia sequence. Apparently, this kind of tomfoolery did in the cartoon series. Too bad, it had potential. It’s a great DVD, though, and watch for a full review (and a free copy to give away) coming soon at www.inthebalcony.com. |
