I may say something about it once I get my jaw back off the ground. |

Yeah, without saying too much, let's just say that this one is... twisted, shocking, and brutal. Monogram strikes again! |

Watched this last night. Without spoiling anything, that lady is some piece of work! Though the ending wasn't quite the surprise reviews had led me to believe. |

I'm watching "The Saint Meets the Tiger" right now on TCM and was happy to see Jean Gillie of "Decoy" as the leading lady opposite Hugh Sinclair in one of his 2 outings as The Saint. Not as showy a part as "Decoy" but she is very good in it. I had also forgotten that Republic released this one rather than RKO. Seeing the Republic bell tower at the beginning was a shock. |

![]() Decoy (1946) Dir. Jack Bernhard A Monogram Picture 76 min. / B&W / 1.37:1 Warner Bros. Film Noir Classic Collection Vol. 4 DVD set Scruple-less Jean Gillie is after $400,000 that death-row denizen Robert Armstrong is takin' to the grave with him, and she'll seduce, kill, and abandon any man she thinks she can help her get the dough: even hapless doctor Herbert Rudley, who has a way to revive Armstrong once the gas chamber is through with him. Can Detective Sheldon Leonard (on the right side of the law for once) figger it all out, or before Gillie's gun-toting thug, Edward Norris, gets him? My GOODNESS what a movie: stop what you're doin' and go watch it right this second and then come back in a couple of hours. G'head, we'll wait. Mercilessly seedy, warped, and twisted, and Gillie (in her American film debut; she'd married director Bernhard and eloped to the states from Britain, but a promising career was cut short by illness and she died only a couple of years later) makes the psycho killer lady of Leave Her to Heaven look like Mother Teresa. Hey, this IS a Monogram picture, so don't be expecting some brilliantly produced classic, but as cheap, no-holds-barred murder melodramas go, this one is hard to top (even if the plot seems lifted from some old Karloff movie). Million-dollar Dialog: Morgue Keeper #1: "Why don't you stop readin' that junk?" Morgue Keeper #2: "What's wrong with the dictionary?" Morgue Keeper #1: "T'ain't enough story to it." A wonderful print on the Warners DVD, and it includes a five minute retrospective on the film (including Dick Cavett; have we seen him do one of these talking heads things before on a noir?) and commentary by the DVD Savant and Stanley Ruben, who wrote the original story. A must-see. |

Man, watched this one 10 years ago and don't remember a lick of it. Perfect time for a rewatch. |

I re-watched this a couple of weeks ago, per the discussion on the "Crime Wave" thread, and it pretty quickly came back to me why I had filed it in the "to be forgotten" drawer. Can't disagree with LG's review. It IS "mercilessly seedy", and it "IS a Monogram picture". Which is to say, not something you would want to show to your Mother. I also listened to the Glenn Erickson / Stanley Rubin commentary, and recommend it. Mr. Rubin comes across as an intelligent, completely engaging old-time Hollywood-insider and story-teller. Alas, according to IMDb, he passed away in 2014 at age 96. |

Agree on the commentary; I listened to about a half of it. You know my taste in movies pretty well by now: a man who enjoys She Demons, The Sadist, and Spider Baby is certainly going to appreciate the heck outta Decoy. |
