Thanks, everybody. Interesting thread, and I'll give Mr. Dean another chance sometime. I agree COMPLETELY with the fact that the teens in Rebel seem like they're from some other planet; gritty b-movie JD pictures seem MUCH more realistic to me.

What percentage of my DVD collection is unwatched? Probably 2/3rds.

What I've been wanting to see by Mr. Kazan, is A Face In The Crowd, with Andy Griffith and Patricia Neal. It's been shown on TCM at least twice the past 6 months, and I only saw the first 10 minutes or so a few weeks ago. Any comments?

Unfortunately the Streetcar film rearranges and rewrites some of the dialogue of a carefully crafted play; watching it, you get the feeling there's something missing, or maybe just awry. Vivien Leigh's makeup is kinda bizarre too.

I wish I had seen the original stage production. Imagine Jessica Tandy in that part!

Face In the Crowd -- don't miss it next time. It's not the greatest movie ever, but there's nothing else like it, and Andy Griffith and Pat Neal are both sensational.

Another don't-miss Kazan picture is Wild River. Montgomery Clift is a liberal government dude whose job is to get people out of a valley so they can build a dam and flood it, and Jo Van Fleet is the crusty old lady who refuses to leave. How do you get people to do what's good for them when they don't understand why? Very timely today with the mess about health care.

Best part of “Face” may be the intelligent script by Budd Schulberg, although Patricia Neal is certainly yummy as always.

I see that Pauline Kael and Andrew Sarris didn’t like it, which I consider a recommendation in itself.

OTOH, not exactly uplifting, so you may not want to see it more than once. It’s out on DVD.

I remember “Wild River” as pretty interesting, also. It’s another one of those films that played NBC Saturday Night at the Movies and then vanished.

Wild River plays regularly on the Fox Movie Channel.

"Face In the Crowd" has always struck me as possibly based at least in part on Arthur Godfrey and in some ways predicts the rise of politically oriented personalities like Rush Limbaugh. Griffith is very good in it and never really did anything like this again. It would have been interesting to see him play more despicable or villainous characters instead of the nice guy and gently comic roles he did for the rest of his career.

Agreed that it was based on Godfrey and that Griffith should have done more meaty parts -- he sure was good in this picture.

Speaking of Limbaugh, somebody told me that he makes 800 MILLION a year. I wonder if that could be true.

Godfrey was sure a despicable character who considered himself above the law because of his popularity.

He was all over the place when I was a kid, and suddenly he was gone, except for smallish parts in three movies. Google him to learn some cool stuff, including this:

"In his own way, Godfrey was a social pioneer. One of the "Little Godfrey" acts were the Mariners, an integrated vocal group of white and African-American Coast Guard veterans. When the act appeared on TV and Southern CBS affiliates and racist Southern politicians complained, Godfrey was quick to respond caustically, decrying the racism and refusing to remove them from the cast."
