Well, I picked up this DVD from Creepy Classics (great service as always-- you can't go wrong with Ron)-- and I have to say I was a bit disappointed. I've always been fascinated with Vampira, which I think began with Burton's ED WOOD--- one of my favorite films-- so to learn more about Vampira was something I was really looking forward to. Unfortunately, this is a fairly amateurish production, at least on first glance. There is no narrator, instead we go from testimonial to testimonial from people like Forry Ackerman, Kevin Eastman & Julie Strain, David J Skal, Penny Dreadful and a host of other figures from the genre (including Zach who is the best of the bunch), and then a sitting shot of Vampira today as she rambles on for what feels like hours about her desire to be an evangelist and the ways she's had to struggle to make ends meet since the show ended. There are some interesting aspects of it, including Vampy's relationship with James Dean and her work with Ed Wood, but overall it feels like a visit with my grandmother. At times through the "interview" I wondered if anyone else was even in the room because there certainly is no indication of it. It's not available on Netflix-- at least not yet-- so if you want to see it you'll have to go my route and buy it, and at only $10 there are worse ways to drop a couple of sawbucks. Andy |
