More from Mike S....

"I picked the titles. I mostly went with ones that had recognizable guest stars, such as George Reeves and Buster Crabbe. But JUNGLE MOON MEN is one of them."

The choice of Jungle Moon Men could be a blockade to future Jungle Jim films; it's easily the worst of the series (Jungle Man-Eaters is pretty bad, too) and, strictly speaking, isn't even a Jungle Jim film (it's one of the last three, in which Johnny Weismuller simply plays "Johnny Weismuller," not Jungle Jim--the rights on the comic strip character expired and Katzman didn't bother renew). Anyhow, Moon Men is an atrociously boring copy of She, with nothing but pseudo-mystical talk, talk, talk--the only action in the film comes at the end when the villains get jumped by a lion. I assume Sony picked this title because of its goofball, "campy" sound, but it's not even in the so-bad-it's-good category (as many of the other JJ films are).

Yeah, but the inclusion of Jungle Moon Men will probably sell additional copies (just for its title) from sci-fi-buyers and Monster Kids who might otherwise not pick up the set. Let's face it, your casual DVD buyer is hardly likely to bring home a Jungle Jim collection anyway.

If Weissmuller ever played anybody other than Tarzan, Jungle Jim, or "Jungle Johnny" Weissmuller, I'm unaware of it.

I was planning on buying a grey market set of these anyway, so I'll hold off for the official. Though, then I'll be missing the rest of 'em.

LG:
Jungle Moon Men is one of the last in the series and starting with Cannibal Attack in 1954 Jungle Jim was no longer used as Johnny Weismuller went by Johnny Weismuller. Maybe Jungle Sam forgot to pay someone for the rights to the name!!!!!!

Weismuller's only non-Jungle Jim, non-Tarzan, non "Jungle Johnny" part was in SWAMP FIRE, in 1946, on temporary hiatus from Sol Lesser's RKO Tarzan films. It's a Paramount/Pine-Thomas B-drama where he plays a returning Cajun Coastguardsman who tries to take up his old job of river pilot after losing his nerve during the war. Buster Crabbe plays his nasty romantic rival. It's not a particularly good film, and Johnny seems out of his depth in in the part, but does get to wrestle an alligator. I have the picture on VHS, but haven't watched it in years.

BTW, for loads and loads of fascinating information on Weismuller's films, co-stars, and film career, check out this site: http://www.geostan.ca/index.html. It's simply terrific.

That makes Swamp Fire one of the few non-Tarzan movies to have two former (or future) Tarzan's in the cast. In fact, the only other one that comes immediately to mind is Flash Gordon (1936).

Other than Swamp Fire (Paramount ’46) Johnny Weissmuller did cameos in Stage Door Canteen (UA, ‘43, and The Phynx (’70).
In Las Vegas in '74 I stopped by Caesar's Palace where Johnny Weissmuller worked as a good-will ambassador hanging around the pool, signing autographs and posing for photos.
I even had Essoe's Tarzan book with me for him to sign. He wasn't at the hotel the day I was there. So my brother and I stayed over one more night.
Next day, again he didn't come in. At my request management called Mr. Weissmuller to see if he was coming in. This took a little while and in about 1 hour my name was announced to come to the front desk where they told me his caretaker said he was still sick and would not be in today. That was the closest I ever got to meeting him.

An internet search brings up an offering of "all 16 classic Jungle Jim films" from The Classic Theater, advertised on special at $39.99. Has anyone seen these, or know anything about them?

From what youse have said, the new, official dvd release will only contain six movies and who knows if the sales will generate their putting out the rest?

The Classic Theater deal is tempting - $2.49 per movie - such a deal B)

Anyone heard anymore on a release date for the Sony box set?

Vornoff, did you try the Classic Theater package? If so, how was the quality?

Well, they don't have cover art yet, but a good deal could be made if any balconeers want just the dvds.
