Most desirable but very expensive. With the declining dollar I've had to put off region 2 buying. Thanks a million, Mr. Bush!

I remember someone's salary went up 100% in 2003...maybe 2004....and it wasn't mine.

Mine, either. And yeah, when I started buying overseas DVDs, I think they were cheaper than US DVDs. My, how times change.

Keep in mind, though, we don't pay VAT (value added tax) which, combined with the amazon.co.uk discount, gives us a big price break. £44.99 for the Naruse collection is, on today's rate of exchange, $94.05. With the amazon.co.uk discount and the VAT subtraction, the cost delivered overseas to my door would be $63.34.

Another example is that W.C. Fields colossal megaset from Universal in the UK. It's got a suggested retail price of £69.99, which is $146.33. Amazon's discount price is £52.49, though, or $109.77. Subtracting the VAT and adding overseas shipping, and my final cost (and I know, 'cause I've ordered it) is $99.82. Still not cheap, but for 17 films that's $5.87 each, or for the six movies in the set I didn't have already, that's $16.64 each, which I would've paid for them if they were U.S. releases.

One more example. The British 21-disc collection of Laurel & Hardy Hal Roach shorts and features, restored and remastered, has an SRP of £199.99 and an amazon price of half that, £98.97. Delivered to the U.S., though, the set is £87.31. Yeah, still very expensive, but...

I can't afford 'em, period. No biggie -- it just means I'm buying more on eBay.

Naruse will have to wait, even though he's about the biggest blank space in my moviewatching. When a Woman Ascends the Stairs is available on Criterion, and it's next in my Netflix queue. Frankly I hope I don't much like it, because I already spend a lot of money on Ozu and Kurosawa.
