TCM will be airing 5 of Charles Starrett's Durango Kid series this Thursday, November 29th starting at 6:00 a.m. Eastern.

6:00 am
"The Durango Kid" (1940) ... one of Starrett's best
7:15 am
"Return of the Durango Kid" (1945)
8:15 am
"Both Barrels Blazing" (1945)
9:15 am
"Blazing the Western Trail" (1945)
10:30 am
"Lawless Empire" (1945)

All of the 1945 entries feature Dub Taylor in the sidekick role before Smiley Burnette joined the series. Starrett's films from the late '30s and early '40s are his best but these are fun to watch.

Watched my first Durango Kid western today--I've never seen one before, honest. It was Trail of the Rustlers (1950) and the plot is pretty straightforward: a gang of malcontents are scheming to buy up all the ranchland in the sleepy little hamlet of Rio Perdido (Spanish for "lost river") because of the recent drought...and are able to speed things up a bit, saleswise, when one of them masquerades as Durango ('who's always worked outside the law...but never against it") and starts terrorizing the town.

It's pretty much your run-of-the-mill B-oater stuff, but what I did notice was differerent about it was that the villain isn't the usual respected-by-all-banker but some dame what runs a hotel and her idiot sons. (I've always believed that when it comes to programmers, Columbia excelled at them more than their competition.) That having been said, I was a little perturbed that Gene Autry protege Gail Davis gets second billing rather than Gene Roth--the poor man's Elisha Cook, Jr.--and Roth has more screen time than Gail!

I have seen the first two and they are not part of the Durango Kid series, if I recall accurately. More like individual films that were made, and
later decided to format the character into a series of westerns. So don't expect the first one to resemble much of the rest of the series.

TCM has a bunch scheduled on their network in the coming months and talk around the campfire is that some of the Starrett westerns being shown on TCM will be non-circulating entries of the series so if you have almost the entire series, get your DVD recorder ready!

A very wise holy (mackerel) man who resides on a mountain top in Tennessee and preaches the gospel of Criterion releases and Sun Drop. I learned a lot from him.

I bet you could take everything you learned from "HIM" and put it on paper in ...oh...about 10 seconds!

No! No! No! No!

Going with jgs' example, the two have to be as physically dissimilar as possible (Gene Roth & Elisha Cook)!!!

Color me clueless. Oh well - I'm never surprised anymore at my screwups. Anyway, I do think Robert Lowery and Victor Mature were separated at birth.

Yes, BT, he's certainly charismatically and thespianically challenged for sure, but I still have a soft spot in my heart for him since I first saw him as Big Tim Champion in CIRCUS BOY back in the ol' days.

CRAP!
Missed 'em by a year!!!!
When I first read this post, I didn't bother myself with noting the date it was posted-- November 27, 2007.
I'd really been counting on dvr-ing those Durango Kid titles.
Looks like I miscomprehended again.
