Myself and many of you out there were weened on faded tv prints and even a sub par video version in the late 1980's on the now defunct Samuel Goldwyn collection. and though it came out on DVD a while back with no fanfare and typical ho hum cover artwork, the sharpness and vibrant colors of this DVD far exceed the $9.99 price point, I am not sure if they unearthed a perfect master negative or used digital technology but what ever it is a must have for any classic film collection. Here are some screen snapshots from the DVD http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-10/1090864/cap519.jpg http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-10/1090864/CAP520.jpg http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-10/1090864/cap522.jpg |

Paul Panzer is one of the biggest proponents of this film that I know, and so -- between the two of you -- you've talked me into scheduling it for an upcoming Friday night feature! |

I remember seeing this on TV when I was very young. That was so long ago that we had a b&W TV; so, I had not realized that this movie was in color!
I shall have to check this out... |

How big a fan am I? It's the best boy's flick of all time, including Doug Fairbanks. This movie has so much going for it, including the most imaginative use of color in any non-animated feature. Michael Powell was one of the three directors. Like a real epic, the film starts in the middle of the story, then fills you in on what happened before. I love that. Plus, Conrad Veidt is an awful, dreadful villan. And when the giant spider gets stuck in the belly, he bleeds green. Panzer's highest recommendation. |

This film has never clicked for me, even having seen it in the theatre. Maybe it needed Zoltan Korda’s touch. However, when the Great Panzer speaks, all must listen. Being the open-minded fellow I am, I will take another look. |

MGM/UA released it to DVD in 2002, but it's now out of print. They have used copies available at Amazon.com starting at $45.98. |

Ralph--The Thief of Bagdad is available on DVD at efilmic.com for $4.59 this week as part of a clearance sale. It's not the official MGM version but if you're squeamish about paying big bucks at Amazon.com for a used copy it'll do in a pinch. The entire sale is here. Efilmic's stock isn't all that different from your regular classic-movie-on-DVD inventory but occasionally you can find a movie or two that's not yet released on disc (a perfect example is Ruggles of Red Gap...but be sure to wait until it goes on sale). |

I've heard rumors that Thief of Baghdad has been restored and will be re-released in 2008, perhaps by Criterion. |

I hope that's true. One of my all-time favorite fantasy pictures. The existing DVD isn't bad. |

I think they did a darn good job of restoring the film on the MGM release (then again it may have been an incredible print of the film or negative) when viewing it on a friends projector screen (about 8 feet) it almost jumped out at you, there were sequences where the transfer picked up details even in the closeups of the wooden ships....it was almost 3d it was so good.....it ran circles around the old Goldwyn VHS version which was out years back...and even that was a vast improvement over what was broadcast over the years....anybody agree? or disagree? then again this is a democracy or something of that nature here.

Actually the DVD looks about the same as the laserdisc that came out in the late '90s. |
