Loved the way the Queen, when Berlosconi called across the room 'Meester Obama - Meester Obama', said, 'Why does that man have to shout!'. ![]() Still reading Matagorda by Louis L'amour - might get Shake a Pagodo Tree by Mike and Bernie Winters - my mum spoke to Mike Winters in Florida in 1981! |

Ordered two books from a single seller at AbeBooks by Cleve F. Brooks, both featuring one of his private eye creations, Rex McBride - Sabotage and The Crooking Finger. Apparently pretty hard-boiled stuff, admittedly a rip-off of some Chandler plots, but with McBride as the anti-hero opposite of Marlowe. Looking forward to them. |

I got a Sony eBook Reader for my birthday. I stocked it up with (free) ebooks from Project Gutenberg. I am currently working my way though Talbot Mundy's Jimgrim saga, in the order given in Brad Day's old 'Biblio' (also free from PG). |

I'm halfway through the series of four books Donald Westlake wrote under the name Sam Holt. A guy who used to solve murders on TV gets to do it in real life. Plenty of fun, a likeable lead character, and shrewd observations on the whole business of imaginary sleuthing. |

In going thru my stacks of stuff, I found an old collection of James Thurber short articles originally written for "The New Yorker." Some of it is incredibly funny. Others are sad-but-true reflections on human society. Good read... by an author you don't hear mentioned much these days. |

Coinky-dink. The Library of America Thurber, collected by Garrison Keillor, is my current car book. That man was very funny, and very, very sad. I'm sincerely glad I wasn't him. |
