Brooks, both featuring one of his private eye creations, Rex McBride - Sabotage and The Crooking Finger. Apparently pretty hard-boiled stuff, admittedly a rip-off of some Chandler plots, but with McBride as the anti-hero opposite of Marlowe. Looking forward to them.

I am currently working my way though Talbot Mundy's Jimgrim saga, in the order given in Brad Day's old 'Biblio' (also free from PG).

A guy who used to solve murders on TV gets to do it in real life. Plenty of fun, a likeable lead character, and shrewd observations on the whole business of imaginary sleuthing.

Some of it is incredibly funny. Others are sad-but-true reflections on human society. Good read... by an author you don't hear mentioned much these days.
