Thanks, RR, I was thinking just domestic (North America) sales. I wouldn't think the international market for serials is very large. |

I guess I'm going to have to just buy this darned thing, to show support for serial releases. But I always found it to be an awfully tiresome serial. Yet I'm not necessarily all that down on 1950s Columbia efforts. I rather modestly liked "Mysterious Island," "Pirates of the High Seas," "Roar of the Iron Horse.". And I found "King of the Congo" and "Captain Kidd," well, somewhat tolerable, as admittedly juvenile hokum. "Blackhawk" wore thin pretty quick, though. Such a great comic, especially when Reed Crandall was doing the art. A shame. However, if "The Lost Planet" gets re-mastered and released, count me out. That one gave me a headache. That one is a bridge too far. |

I dunno, I liked all those Columbia serials and more, including Valley of Lost Men. Not to beat a dead horse, but watching only one chapter a week really prevents serials from getting overly tiresome, at least in my house. Blackhawk's here and I'm very pleased with it and by the way, ain't that a great cover? |

I saw on Amazon ads for MYSTERIOUS ISLAND, GOVERNMENT AGENTS VS. PHANTOM LEGION, MONSTER AND THE APE, and G-MEN VS. THE BLACK DRAGON. Are any of these legitimate releases, or are they all bump ups from tape? |

Cheezy Flicks appear to at least sometimes have used the LaserDisc copies of these serials for their sources. They're just a decent quality gray market company, maybe a cut below Roan but better than Alpha in most cases. Just about any surviving serial is available from somebody on the 'net but the quality is usually from questionable to outright horrible. Of course, these are all either gray market or pirate sources. |

I'm new to the serial, but since no one else has commented: Chapter One looked good. Made from a nice, presumably 35mm film print, rather than the negative (there are reel changeover cues), and this time the modern Columbia logo is just tacked on at the end, so the chapter itself is intact. Definitely Katzman. I have to say I was really glad to see the substituted brothers gimmick cleared up right away. I was dreading 15 chapters of that old chestnut. |

I ordered Blackhawk from Amazon … out of curiosity and wanting to encourage folks like Mill Creek to give us more decent quality serials. I admit I’m pleasantly surprised. First the print is excellent with just a few white specks. Since most of the action happens in daylight it’s not much of a distraction. The plot isn’t quite as frantic as a Republic serial but Spencer Bennett keeps things moving. Man they like explosions! I’m three chapters in and the fights have been pretty good, especially the one in a burning warehouse in chapter #2. It took me a moment to figure out where all the energy came from – Dave Sharpe was on the stunt team and doubling John Crawford (Chuck) and Rick Vallin (Stan and Boris). Another interesting thing is in the opening titles they credit Quality Comics and artist Reed Crandall. Blackhawk was created by Will Eisner and Charles Cuidera for Military Comics in 1941. Crandall started drawing for the comic a year later and did the art through 1953. Crandall was a stickler for detail in all the military hardware so other artists would “swipe” his designs. It is a little odd that they would single him out in the credits. I know that some people aren’t blown away by Blackhawk but it doesn’t suck. It’s not bad for a 1950s aviation serial. I just hope that the stop sending all the Blackhawks out as a team. There are times when they look like the Keystone Cops. |

I agree the Blackhawk print is very good. Something I found bothersome was Blackhawk's costume - the crest should be on his chest - not 6 inches lower - the costume department that made Batman's mask for Batman and Robin obviously used the same skill level for Blackhawk's jacket. |

You're right on the costumes. Maybe Kirk had a sunken chest. (Sorry) If you compare them to the comics at least Columbia tried. They look like wool and had to be hot as the blazes. If you want a drinking game take a shot every time you see a member of the Blackhawks try to pull down his jacket. |

OK, I'd appreciate a little feedback here. I was just thinking of ordering the Millcreek release for this serial, which I saw was finally available on Amazon, when I read this review of its quality on another site: Not impressed with this DVD. Mill Creek went cheap on the encoding with this one. Tight close ups look great, but cut to a medium close shot & the video shows fuzzy low-res graininess & some combing. In one medium shot Blackhawk's mouth, as he speaks, disappears in a mush of small pixels. And often it looks like the picture has been sprinkled with a light layer of sand. Mill Creek's The Shadow looks much better than this one. Don't waste your money. Comments? Jazzy? |

I didn't have any problem with the presentation on a 50" screen, Mr. Bats. |

Thanks, guys. That just adds to all the positive reviews on this thread, think I'll go with the majority on this one. |
