So I'm watching a colorized version of PORKYS ROAD RACE and it strikes me that the Frankenstein monster looks less sinister than I recalled when I saw it in b/w. When they colored these did they redraw/edit some of them? Or is the coloring changeing my perception? How many got this colorized treatment? |

I have Porky's Road Race in color and do not think Frankenstein was redrawn. I have most of the colorized Merrie Melodies and Looney Tunes and I have not noticed anything redrawn in them. However 2 black and whites, with short scenes of nice 3-D fore and backgrounds moving in perspective, did not come out 3-D when they were colorized. It's the Popeye's that had a lot of redrawn stuff when they were colorized. And this caused some spelling errors like in "A Clean Shaven Man" the sign on Wimpy's shop is spelled "Bber Shop." Back to Porky with a question: in Fish Tales (1936) Porkys boat flies up in the air then lands hard on the ocean leaving Porky unconscious, hanging over the side, with his face in the water. A small fish swims up to his nostrils and cartoon cuts quickly to Porky sitting up. Does anyone know what exactly was cut here? I have almost every Porky cartoon and this is the only one where I notice something may be censored. Or are there other cuts in Porky's? Thanks. |

I've had the pleasure of not watching a single redrawn for about six years now. And I don't have the slightest urge to ever do so again. |

I'm with you. Why anybody would watch a colorized anything, let alone a cartoon, is beyond me. |

Your statement stems from the fact that first there were redrawn colorizations and later, computer colorizations. The latter were more common on TV after they were done in the 90s. So, IIRC, many of the computer colorized cartoons were originally redrawn in color in the late 60s...I'm assuming you're seeing more of the computer ones rather than the original redrawn colorizations. |

What Tom said. Technically, they were all redrawn. |

Curious about this redrawing of cartoons when colourizing them. What's it all about? And why even do it? |

Don't get me started. The Popeyes were sent to Zimbabwe or Rhodesia or Korea, someplace like that, and done as cheaply as possible. It was cheaper to trace 'em in color than to overlap the color onto the B&W, I guess. No idea about the Warner ones, or why - when they have hundreds of color cartoons - they thought colorizing the B&W ones was necessary. |

Yes, it seems stupid, but that's never stopped a studio before. |

The Warners shorts were done the same way. There was a great demand for Warners shorts, with them popping up in several syndication packages (separate from the network Saturday morning airings). At that point in the mid-60's, even the theatrical shorts were being created with TV in mind. |
