To celebrate Kong's birthday, the Film Forum in NYC is having screenings of the big guy this Sunday. Not only is this a chance to see the original Kong on the big screen, the way he was meant to be seen, but with an audience. An extra dessert is a Fay Wray Scream-Alike contest judged by a panel of film critics, authors and historians, including Fay's daughter. Prizes to be distributed.

Go to filmforum.org to see the details.

Ok Sarge. Already got tickets. They had a similar event on another of Kong's birthdays (50th?) down in the East Village in NYC. Women dressed in period costume, various people dressed as characters from the film and a guy in a gorilla suit who stole the show. Some pretty good screamers too. It was really fun watching Kong with a crowd.
The whole audience screamed as Kong came through the gate.

Man, other than seeing Kong on the big screen, what a great time this sounds like, enjoy yourself BT. I would also like to read about your Kong adventure.

The younger Gravys and I attended and had a swell time, and yes, we got to meet the legendary Balconeer Foist Class the Black Tiger, a handsome and sober fella. Well, handsome. Anyway, sorry we had to dash off after the movie, BT. It was a sell-out, a wonderful crowd, and a great afternoon at the movies.

It was a pleasure meeting Gravy and his sons. Sorry they couldn't hang out longer. And yes gentle Balconeers, Gravy does live up to the hype - he's a really good guy (just don't tell anyone else!)

Kong was fun to see on a movie screen with an audience. They dug out an ancient b/w cartoon featuring a bear flying a plane around the world, visiting many countries and cultures before returning triumphantly to New York to be greeted by among other things, Kong on the Empire State Building waving an American flag. I do recall that Eiling had something to do with this. The Bear reminded me of Bimbo early in the Betty Boop series.

A group called the Sons of Kong (!) were in force wearing identical 75th Anniversary tee-shirts of the big monkey.

Mention was made of good old WOR tv in New York City that broadcast Kong every Thanksgiving for years (never could get the analogy!)

Kong itself was magnificent as always. On the big screen I recognized serial veteran Dick Curtis as a gasbomb toting member of the crew. Also enjoyed Leroy Mason's cameo at the end complaining that his date WOULD want to come to a $20 show. Whatta skinflint!

It was fun seeing Kong's adventures on a large screen and with an audience who all were there looking forward to seeing it.

The post-screening screaming contest was a bit disappointing in that no one showed up in costume and there was no scene-stealing guy in a monkey suit this time around.

Prizes included a dvd box set of Forbidden Hollywood, a dvd box set of Kong and for the grand prize, both sets plus two tickets to the top of the Empire State Building.

We sat behind the celebrity judges including horror producer Richard Gordon, author Tom Weaver, Italian horror journalist Giulia D'Agnolo Vallan (known to our row as Judge Giulia),
Village Voice journalist Elliott Stein (who actually saw Kong first-run 75 years ago!) and Judge of honor, Susan Riskin (daughter of Fay Wray). Film Forum Programmer Bruce Goldstein gave the judges their instructions to judge "not only on the quality of the scream, but their poise and capturing the spirit of Fay Wray's performance."

My favorite contestant, the tatooed girl from the Film Forum popcorn counter was disqualified since she worked there.

A fun Kong 75th Birthday Anniversary. Looking forward to the 100th!
