Balconeers within driving distance of Syracuse, New York might want to hustle over to this year's Cinefest, which begins this coming Thursday (March 13th) and runs through Sunday. Among the rare silents and early talkies being shown is the rare 1925 adaptation of Zane Grey's WILD HORSE MESA, starring Jack Holt, Billie Dove, Noah Beery, and a very young Douglas Fairbanks Jr. The screening will be introduced by Riddle Rider, who'll be selling and signing copies of his recent book, FILMING THE WEST OF ZANE GREY, on Saturday afternoon.

I should have mentioned this earlier, but I didn't know until just a few days ago where in the schedule the convention programmer had slotted WILD HORSE MESA.

Cinefest is a goldmine of rare screenings. 16 & 35 mm screenings of many extremely rare titles, many from film vaults out for a one-time showing. Most of these films are terrific. Short blurbs telling the plots of a number of these films do not do justice to how good most of these films really are. Also a good-sized dealer's room and lots of friendly film enthusiasts. Leonard Maltin is usually in attendance and is immensely funny and capable as the best auctioneer I've ever seen.

See ya there, RR
