I saw a rental print of The Iron Claw at college back in the sixties. I'm sure it was 16 mm, but they also had 35 mm capabilty. As I remember it, the film copy had pretty much the same visual problems as my DVD from Rodney and Co. The girl doing the selections asked the rental company for something melodramatic (to replace The Clutching Hand in the program), but something that had better action for those that were bored by The Clutching Hand. They recommended The Iron Claw. The Iron Claw was my favorite for the whole series.

Restored Serials offers a better print of Galahad than I do. Thanks for all of the praise though! Shelby did point me to the source of those 16mm transfers, and while my eye isn't perfect for those kinds of things, I'm yet to hear any complaints. They came from a collector in Alabama who isn't online. |

Just like to make it clear, I am (MaskedMala) Matinee Graphix, not Bruce from Restored Serials. On the back of the DVD cover of Adventures of Sir Galahad, it's written "Package Design 2007 Matinee Graphix matineenostalgia@hotmail.com" and that's the only thing I have to do with this serial, I've done the DVD cover, the DVD itself is from Rodney of OldieDVD. I'm offering my service to collector/seller and I've done some DVD covers for OldieDVD as well as for Hermitage Hill Media and also for a private collector who's working on a never before seen silent serial. I've contacted in the past Restored Serials, Richard Ozark and DownUnder DVD but it didn't worked out. So that's it, Matinee Graphix is not a DVD seller. |

I see Sinister Cinema is offering WOLF DOG now, and am wondering if their print is an improvement over what has been offered before? I have their KING OF THE WILD, and it is a very nice print. Shows some wear, but I recommend it. Did VCI remove the logos from RIDERS OF DEATH VALLEY yet? I heard they were going to do it. |

I just finished previewing THE PHANTOM CREEPS from VCI. While I have not watched every chapter to verify every scene is intact compared to other prints, the picture quality is superb and the best I have seen anywhere. If you are looking for print quality, grab the VCI release. Again, unless someone went to Universal and borrowed their 35 mm master, we're all stuck with the 16 mm prints so the catch is finding the best print and having the best transfer. VCI just did that for us. MYSTERIOUS ISLAND, DEADWOOD DICK, and THE GREAT ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN KIDD are available from a number of sources. Best prints I have seen come from Rodney. While my print of THE IRON CLAW is not an improvement quality wise, the fact that I will have the 16 mm reels transferred directly to DVD as a first-generation print within a few weeks should help "clear" the picture a bit. If anyone knows of a SUPERB print, let me know before I go to the trouble of having this transferred later in the month. I'd rather buy someone else's print first and find out if there is truly better. Frankly, I don't want to buy another multi-generation, dark print from a vendor who claims they have a clean first-gen gtransfer and be disappointed so honest suggestions please. When I get my 16 mm Kodak print transferred, Rodney will begin offering it. I will send him a copy and he'll mention on his site that it's the upgraded print. Estimated time frame is mid-late July. While I am at it, I will have my 16 mm masters of VALLEY OF VANISHING MEN transferred as well. THE GREAT ADVENTURES OF WILD BILL HIKCOK and THE VIGILANTE (with Ralph Byrd) is not in perfect quality, but best prints I have seen is a first-gen transfer from Rodney as well. I double-checked. Roan's print of THE TIGER WOMAN is definately from the commercial Republic release, but somehow when I played their DVD on the big screen (12 by 7 feet), the laserdisc transfer to a DVD-R has MUCH better picture quality than Roan's. Roan has a softer, more grainer feel. It's not as sharp. maybe during their transfer they lost something. It's a good copy, but if you get a direct transfer from a laserdisc, you'll get better. Rodney has a print of HAUNTED HARBOR that is clearly from a 16 mm master. But it's from a 3-quarter format so I suspect that came from Fred Shay. Shay is the only person who offers 3-quarter format that I know of. You can get HAUNTED HARBOR from a transfer from the Republic video release and get a better print. I have NEVER seen a superb print of THE MYSTERIOUS MR. M. I have three separate releases. Can anyone suggest a great print or is all that's out there is the crummy dark prints? Neal Ellis in Maryland, www.newsondvd.com ? has the best print of Commando Cody I have seen, but I suspect there is better elsewhere. Almost all Republics should be drop dead gorgeous, and this appears that way on a 22 inch TV screen, but on a 12 by 7, it pixels. THE SIGN OF THE WOLF. I purchased a copy of the serial from Fred Shay years ago and have yet to see a better print, ahving bought four. Anyone know of a superb print? I have the Satellite Media release, Rodney's, and Sinister Cinema. Apparently (gasp!) Shay once had access to a decent print that has yet to be unmatched. I will preview KING OF THE WILD tomorow (the Alpha release) and let everyone know who has the best print - Alpha, Sinister or Video Yesteryear. |

Isn't VCI really the only source for those? Isn't everyone else offering them just making copies of one sort or another of VCI vhs tapes or DVDs? Its resonably easy to copy any dvd to your computer, remove the menus, do editing, merge two discs into one etc. Has anyone else has ever done another film to video transfer from different film reels for X-9 and Jungle Jim? |

The guy in Canada I was referring to was Robert Biscayne. He offered a number of serials that were film transfers. A couple of his I still have because to date they are the best prints. Only problem is the dumb ass did the transfer poor, so they are not sharp at all. But I could tell they were great prints and had he done a better job, he "could" have surpassed VCI. To date, VCI has better for those titles in question. |

I just got a flier in the mail promoting Cinecon 44 in Hollywood. www.cinecon.org The convention is apparently showing chapters of The Iron Claw. According to the schedule, and I quote, "the concluding chapters of The Iron Claw (1941)." Why the concluding chapters, I do not know, unless it's because they played the other chapters in previous years. Anyway, they show films from mm masters. Anyone know their source? |

Cinecon has been showing THE IRON CLAW for years now, two or three chapters at a time. One of the committee members used to work for Columbia (and then Sony), and he's still connected to the studio -- albeit tenuously -- as a consultant. He's procured many, many rare Columbia archival prints for Cinecon over the last ten years or so. As it happens, THE IRON CLAW is an old circulating print dating back to the serial's theatrical reissue in the '50s. I was at Cinecon last year and saw chapters 10, 11 and 12. It's quite a treat to see 35mm serial chapters projected on the big screen in Hollywood's venerable Egyptian Theatre, where Cinecon now holds all its screenings. Talkie-era serials aren't terribly important in the Cinecon mix; like the Cinefest group (many of whom also attend Cinecon regularly), the Cinephiles are primarily interested in silents and early talkie feature films. Films of later vintage are periodically scheduled to accommodate guest stars who worked during the '50s and '60s, but for the most part we go there to salivate over recently restored silents and early talkies. Last year Universal restored my favorite Tom Mix sound Western, RIDER OF DEATH VALLEY, with a new print from the original 35mm nitrate negative. Seeing that at the Egyptian was practically a religious experience for me. I've been lobbying Columbia for years to restore my favorite Charles Starrett Western, OUTLAWS OF THE PRAIRIE. And darned if I didn't get them to do it. Unfortunately, it's tentatively scheduled for this year's convention and I don't think I'll be able to go. |

Mr Orsak, yes, I've contacted you about 3 to 4 years ago offering you my service for doing artwork for DVD covers of serials and films you were selling and at that time you've replied telling me you'll think about it. In the message boardof the IN THE BALCONY, in answer to a message, I was just explaining that I have done the DVD cover for the serial Adventures of Sir Galahad that the poster was talking about and that I've offered my service for graphic designs to other peoples. |

I recorded Batman on an AMC marathon when I was a senior in college, so it aired in late 94 or early 95. |
