I saw this film today thanks to the fine folks at IFC. The film is just over a hour and a half. 3 men are sitting in an abandoned building (a sign outside the building has "RASHOMON" on it) as it pours rain. The men talk about a dead man who was found in the woods. All 3 men tell about what they told the authorities and they all have a different take on it. A bandit (Kurosawa staple Toshiro Mifune) is also brought in for questioning as is the dead man's wife. Who's telling the truth? Of all the stories, one things for sure...the dead man, before he was killed, was leading a horse through the woods and his wife was riding on the horse. They come upon a bandit (Mifune) and something happens and the man is left dead in the forest. How did the man die???? Who's tellin the truth about what they know????? Another great film from the Japanese director. I miss the extras I get with some of the Netflix discs, but what the hey, it's nice to see something I want to see come on a cable channel other than TCM. 4.5 bong hits for this puppy. The moral is better than the hour and a half it takes to get to it.....as it should be. Stony's favorite scene ....... To tell the dead man's story to the authorities (You never see the authorities, which is cool, it's just the actors facing the camera telling their stories...sitting on the ground, natch) a medium is brought in and she connects with the dead man and tells his story about the his death!!! But is his spirit tellin' the truth???? I'm seeing great movies left and right....they're just be-boppin' all over the place.

This film -- which the Theatre says is the most-requested film in the history of the festival -- will be showcased at the annual Japanese Film Festival at the historic Crest Theatre in Sacramento tomorrow night. I plan to be there. In the balcony, of course. |
