I suspect that not showing conservatives as rabid idiots hurt this fine movie with the critics. Turns out it's a remarkable true tale about Afghanistan written by Adam Sorkin (of The West Wing) and directed by Mike Nichols, who has to be over 75 now but is still chugging along. Technically, state of the art. Julia's charismatic as a sexy billionaire, though her Texas accent is a bit wobbly. This is one of Hanks' better performances -- I'm no fan. This time he holds himself back and scores in the big moments. Philip Seymour Hoffman steals the movie as an abrasive spook, topping even his own performance in Capote. He has wonderful lines and makes the most of them. The story tells how an obscure and frivolous Congressman got interested in the Afghanistan situation and sided with the Afghanis, incidentally bringing down the Russian empire. No, really. And that's not all -- it also tells how we had a big part in creating the current situation in the Middle East. Try this one, I think you'll be delighted. It just came out on DVD, and the DVD's a beauty. |

All the critics I read liked this movie. I'm looking forward to it but waiting for the Blu-Ray version. |
