Didn't know what to 'spect with this one, but wasn't expecting an updated version of Gunga Din set in the Reconstruction Southwest, where U.S. Cavalry sergeants Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Peter Lawford, with their sidekick, ex-slave Sammy Davis, Jr., battle the Ghost Riders, a whites-hating group of savage renegade Injuns led by Henry Silva. Sammy walks off with every scene he's in, but Dean is excellent, too. A lot of good stunts and fancy fightin', courtesy of director John Sturges, and the Monument Valley scenery is breathtaking, as always. Interesting commentary by Frank Sinatra, Jr., too, who was a gopher on the set. Not a great movie by any stretch of the critique, but... let's call it diverting, colorful, and thanks to Sammy and Dino and the action, enjoyable. The DVD -- included in the new Warner Bros. "Rat Pack" collection, although it was a United Artists picture and the DVD opens with MGM and Fox logos -- is fine, except there's no trailer or other bonus except for the commentary. |

Incidentally, I hadn't realized that the new "Rat Pack" edition was such a deluxe set... In addition to four films (Sergeants 3, Ocean's 11, Robin and the 7 Hoods, 4 for Texas), three of which do not feature the Three Stooges, you get: * A "Rat Pack" deck of playing cards * A miniature reprint of the Ocean's 11 presskit * Miniature lobby cards, 8 of 'em, in full color, for Sergeants 3 * 10 B&W photos taken on the set of the making of the films * A coupon to mail in for four free full-size replicas of the four films' posters It's very nice. |
