Anyone here attend the Buster Keaton film festival in Iola, KS? It's an hour and a half or so from me and am wondering if it's worth the drive this autumn?

That's not too far from Stacia's stomping grounds...I'll bet she went.

Oz: Where do you live? I live in Paola, Ks which is also about an hour and a half from Iola.

I have not attended this festival but I get their flyers every year. I have had the impression it was more Q and A than actual viewing of his films but I could be wrong.

A really good silent film festival for Kansans is in Topeka every year in February.

Yes, I just found out about the festival in Topeka last month, after the latest one was over. I will definitely try to get there next year. I'm in Lawrence so it's just a quick jaunt down the interstate.

The Kansas Silent Film Festival has the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra every year and Marvin Fauwell on the pipe organ. And that pipe organ is one big instrument. The movies they show are on 16 mm film in a 1,000 seat auditorium on the campus of Washbun University. The auditorium at various times during the weekend is nearly filled to capacity.

Here is a link to the events that were held this past February.

I've never been to the festival in Iola. It's actually quite a ways away from where I live. I have been to the Topeka Silent Film Fest though, and it's great. The last time I went I saw "Phantom of the Opera" in a really nice print that Eric Grayson of AMS fame brought to show. That's also where I saw the Laurel & Hardy short "Wrong Again", which I just bought a copy of.

That was the first time I attended the Kansas Silent Film Festival when they showed PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. I have not missed that festival since and have become a real fan of silent films.

Mrs Smiley were making plans to attend the Keaton Festival in Iola when she entered the hospital for open heart surgery three years ago. Still have not attended the Keaton festival.
