The Western Film Fair normally held in Charlotte, NC annually is now in Winston-Salem. I will be an attendee as usual. Anyone interested, it's July 16 - 19, 2008.

I looked at the web site. Shouldn't a Western Film Fair web site list at least some of the movies being shown?

IMO, too many film conventions have become showcases for marginal "stars" selling autographed pictures. From what I can see, Charlotte is one of them. Too bad.

I scanned the link listing guest stars from previous WFFs. According to that, the last year I went was 1989. Seems hard to believe, especially since the Charlotte show was one of my favorites.

I went to Charlotte last year after a multi-year (decades?) absence. The stars were indeed marginal, but I did enjoy the films. All on 16mm and many titles I hadn't seen before. Several old faces from the past popped up. Decent dealer's room, too.

Actually I can't remember Charlotte, Memphis, Nashville or any other primarily Western/Serial conventions ever listing what films would be shown in advance. Cinefest, Cinecon and the bigger movie cons might have, but not the little guys. In these days of the internet, I guess we just expect all information to be available at our fingertips.

Plus, I guess if you advertise what you're showing, you open yourself up to studios griping about your "public exhibitions".

You're right, Tiger; they never did list titles in advance. I guess I have been spoiled by easy internet access to information!

In those halcyon pre-video days, when we hadn't seen as much good old stuff, we could always count on a schedule crammed with rare goodies. I can still remember sitting through 12 B-Westerns in one day at the 1975 Nashville Western Film Fair. (But I'll admit to dozing off during several of them!)

Hey Black Tiger, I remember attending last years Charlotte Western Film Fair with my wife and son. It was great hanging out with you, Barcroft, Hi-Yo Silver and Powder Solvag. We saw some good films, the dealer room was large and wasn't that Bar-B-Que restaurant great?
Have a good time. Wish I could be there this year. And would you give us a report back here of films and guest stars after you get back home?

So far, lots of good B-westerns and a pretty big dealer's room. I'm carrying a black shoulder bag with a red cicle if anyone out there is at the fest and wants to hook up.

They did play westerns on the big screen. Almost all of the conventions I attend do not list what they are showing in advance on their web-site. Most likely due to the copyright issues. Just because they do not list the titles doesn't mean they are not playing movies.

The convention does not swamp itself on stars autographing pictures. It really is western movie oriented. Panels were great. Stars are in the back of the vendor room.

I enjoyed this year.

Regarding the comment that stars are becoming a staple for conventions, the problem is that too many people are not supportive for events. A percentage attends conventions to wander the vendor room, a percentage for the movies and events and a percentage for the movie stars. 80% attend for the movie stars. I asked a guy who did a poll who works a convention. 35% attend for the vendor room and 10% for the events and movies shown in the movie room. There is a cross-over, but that's what Bill told me. I got the majority of the same thing from Martin Grams at MANC and Tommy at Charlotte.

The reasons for attending may vary from person to person, but the stars are a necessity. And I prefer to support any event that keeps conventions going. A negative comment prevents people from going and that only hurts a hobby, not helps.
