A nice appreciation of Ray Harryhausen from TCM's "Movie Morlocks" blog.

Good Stuff. When I was a kid, I loved Mysterious Island and Jason And The Argonauts, the fighting bone-heads from the Hydra's teeth are just great entertainment. It wasn't until I was a teen did I see 20 Million Miles To Earth. I love that as well, having just watched it again last month on TCM. Hell, I've even made it the background on my desktop of my work computer.

I love those films, too. My fave, though, is probably The 7th Voyage of Sinbad.

Harryhausen was great. My favorite was probably Jason & the Argonauts. They had a Harryhausen special a few years ago at the Lincoln Center Walter Reade Theater where the man himself gave a talk, showed some of the intricate models of his work used in various films, and then they screened Jason on the big screen with a sold-out audience.
Nothing like seeing Harryhausen films in a movie theater.

In the summer of 1958 (or maybe '59) my parents, brother, sister and I were camping in tents at Lake Erie's East Harbor. The drive-in theater down the road was showing "The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad." I pleaded with dad and he finally agreed to take us all to it. Mom made a big sack of popcorn over the campfire to take along with grape and orange pop. I loved "Sinbad" and was amazed by every second of it!" After about 15 min of the 2nd feature "The Deep Six" we left. This was the first monster movie I ever seen in color!
Then I started saving my 25 cents weekly allowance to buy "Famous Monsters of Filmland" magazine. And I still have those first 20 or so issues! Great memories.
