The previously thought lost footage from Fritz Lang's 1927 film Metropolis has been uncovered in Buenos Aires.

Here's hoping it will sooner or later turn up in a new edition from Kino. Or perhaps it will turn up on Blu-Ray and will be the film which will push me to go Blu.

Crikey! How frustrating this must be to every company that has put out a "definitive" dvd over the past few years.

If the still in the article is any example, the film is going to need a lot of work before it is ready to take its place in the "new, improved" definitive edition. Still, this is great news.

It's a dream come true. Of course the film has become celebrated in its short version, which some people may end up preferring. I first saw SPIES in a shortened version and much prefer the complete one, so my conclusion is that Lang knew what he was doing.
Life is just a bowl of cherries, it's too mysterious, don't take it serious...

The Digital Bits has received confirmation from Kino that a new edition restoring the missing footage will be coming on both DVD and Blu-Ray in 2009.

There was an interview with the Argentinian archivist who was a principal in making the discovery on Morning Edition on NPR this morning. It's probably available at the NPR website. Very interesting interview.
