When I was a kid I preferred the Captain Marvel comic books to Superman. There was more obvious humor in the Captain comics (the Captain was referred to frequently as 'the big cheese' IIRC by his opponents). The costume was also cooler. There was just something about those Fawcett comics that appealed to me. |

Sad to see the original big, red cheese go due to corporate greed & pettiness. On the other hand, C. C. Beck's character never really fit in when it was revived back in 1972. In the 40's, the character was clearly geared towards kids (say 6 to 10 years of age) who made up the bulk of the comic book market, & it was highly successful (outsold Superman). It was whimsical, simply drawn & sheer fantasy. As a kid I loved it. I also liked it as I grew older as I felt it belonged in the same category as Barks' ducks & Stanley's Little Lulu. That was definitely NOT the comic book audience of '72 & I have no idea what that audience is today!! |

I bought Shazam! for a while — it came out toward the end of my most active years as a comic-book collector — but could always tell that it was trying too hard to recapture the whimsy injected into the old Captain Marvel. C. C. Beck was a crotchety old son of a bitch who happily took DC's money for a good long while, then spent the remainder of his life trash-talking the people he worked with there. I had my own run-in with him at a New York ComiCon in the early to mid '70s. Can't remember the exact year, but Beck was one of the guests. I rented a dealer's table at that particular show and had just finished arranging my stock when he ambled by, saw my copy of an early Whiz Comics, and tapped it with a forefinger. "That's one of mine," he said casually. I engaged him in conversation and told him how much I liked his work on the character, which was true enough. When I asked him about the serial he turned sour. "It was silly," he snarled. "I never understood how anybody could take it seriously." This pissed me off: then as now, I took my favorite serials seriously. So instead of letting it go I shot back, "Yeah, I guess it's easier to take a talking tiger seriously." (This was a reference to Cap's pal Talky Tawny.) He fixed a baleful stare on me for just a second before turning away and walking down the aisle. At the time I regretted being such a smart-ass; after all, this was one of the Golden Age greats. And I had insulted him for no good reason. But years later, after reading so many interviews in which he trashed his peers and essentially damned the whole comic-book industry, I decided he deserved my crack after all. |

I'll just add that DC Comics paid a fee to Marvel to use the name "Captain Marvel" on the cover of Shazam! comics in the 1970s until sales proved so underwhelming that they dropped both the the use of the name on the cover and the licensing fee. I loved the original 1940s Marvel Family. The '70s not so much.

My understanding was that Beck objected to the violence in the serial (C.M. machine gunning down natives & throwing a bad guy off a roof top). The film C.M. seemed totally unrelated to the comics version. But, Republic tended to make a habit of that. As for Beck being cranky, old age will do that to ya. I'm gettin' a bit cranky myself (sighhhhhhh)!! |

Hey, my wife has always been cranky, and that was before she got old. Of course being married to a Stark will do that to you.

Captain Marvel -- I think under that name -- appeared in the excellent "Justice League Unlimited" animated series. He was a portrayed as a superhero who grew up worshipping Superman, then became disillusioned when caught up in the rivalry between Superman and Lex Luthor. I think it was the late 60s when I came across a revived Fawcett "Captain Marvel". He was a scientist / professor who was actually an android, and his superpower was sending his arms and legs off to fight or whatever on their own ("SPLIT!"). |

It looks great, I haven't sampled the commentary yet, and no doubt one of my inane reviews'll be up this weekend. |

Just got the Blu-ray, of this, and it looks terrific! I only had time, to check the first chapter, but I had a question. In one, of the reviews, it stated, that it had the re-release title, but mine says. ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN MARVEL. I thought, that the re-release title was RETURN OF CAPTAIN MARVEL. Can someone explain this, to me? Thanks. |
