Les Amiches is the third good Antonioni movie I've seen (the other two are L'Eclisse and Blow Up). This picture is sort of an Italian version of The Women, with all sorts of plot twists and turns, and with believable characters, unlike the unspeakably dull L'Avventura and its even worse sister piece, La Notte, both of them about bored rich people I couldn't care less about. Then he made The Red Desert, and Pa Stark is very funny about how dreary that one is. It was a well-photographed color movie about industrial waste, and the Italians just couldn't resist making the waste beautiful. Hell, they make pizza beautiful.

Then the guy made two wretched movies in the U.S.: Zabriskie Point and The Passenger, the latter with Jack Nicholson but don't let that fool you. The sad thing is that he proved three times that he could make a fine movie when he took a notion to. A terrible waste of genuine talent. Somehow he got the idea that you have to bore the audience to depict bored people, and it ruined him, except with the highbrow critics, who should have known better. Panzer gives this movie 4 1/2 tickets. Not dull for a second.
Life is just a bowl of cherries, it's too mysterious, don't take it serious...
